From November 9, bike rack use on all public transport buses in the region will be temporarily stopped.
In a statement released this week, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council said the stoppage is a precautionary measure follows recent safety concerns that, on some bus models in New Zealand, bike racks may partially obstruct headlights when loaded with bikes, potentially making them non-compliant with road safety regulations.
Transport director Oliver Haycock said the decision was not made lightly.
“Cycling and public transport go hand-in-hand for many of our passengers, and we’re committed to a solution that ensures safe, seamless travel.
"This temporary pause prioritises safety as we work closely with NZTA Waka Kotahi and our operators to understand these potential compliance issues.
“Safety is central to our service, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we await clarity from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
"If it transpires that buses in our region are impacted, we will then work towards a safe, long-term solution.”
The Regional Council is working proactively with partners, operators, and industry bodies to address the issue promptly.

In the old days, the fifties, prams were hung on hooks screwed to the back of the bus. I do remember one bouncing off and careering into the scrub. The bus DID stop and reverse back for it. In those days, rudimentary buses did 15km/hr or less up steep hills.
What a laugh

If you ride a bike, why do you need a bus? To expect everyone to sit and wait while you fasten your bike to a rack is nonsensical anyway.

Hey mate. If I ride my bike to work and it's pouring with rain when time to go home, a bus would be nice. It takes 30 seconds to load your bike. People don't mind as there are many other "waits" for people to hop aboard: mobility scooters, old folks with walkers. Have patience young man. And buy a bike...

And that's how you use bikes and buses. You put your bike on the bus and off you go.
Why worry, look how many cars are traveling illegally with bikes. Police do nothing. What about the helmet LAW?

How did any of the buses get a warrant?

The rack likely deemed to impact lights with a bike attached.
No bike, no issue, compliant.
