The Lions Clubs of Waihī, Paeroa, Katikati, and Ōmokoroa are teaming up to raise awareness and funds for diabetes on Sunday, November 17, with a special community walk around the rim of Waihī’s historic Martha Mine Pit.

This event, dubbed ‘Lap the Map for Diabetes Awareness’, will take participants on a scenic five-kilometre stroll around the pit, starting at the iconic Pump House at the top of Seddon Street.

The walk is open to all, with no set starting time between 8am and 12pm. Whether you’re looking to complete the full loop or just walk a short distance, the event is designed to be fun, flexible, and family-friendly.

Raising awareness for a global health crisis

November is World Diabetes Awareness Month, and this walk is part of a national Lions Club-led initiative.

The aim is to bring attention to the growing impact of diabetes, which affects one in ten New Zealanders, and raise funds for the Bay of Plenty Diabetes Association’s Annual Family Camp, where children with Type 1 Diabetes attend a special camp.

According to the International Federation of Diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is often undiagnosed, with half of those affected unaware of their condition.

Diabetes-related health expenditure in Australasia was estimated at US$162.2 billion ($277.36b) in 2019, a figure expected to rise significantly in the coming years.

Lions Clubs International has chosen diabetes awareness as a major focus, alongside other key health and humanitarian causes such as vision, hearing, childhood cancer, hunger, and environmental sustainability.

This walk is part of a larger movement to engage local communities and raise awareness and much-needed funds for diabetes care.

A “gold coin” for a great cause

Participants are encouraged to donate a gold coin, with all proceeds going to the Bay of Plenty Diabetes Association to support children and families affected by diabetes. Every step taken around the rim of the mine pit will contribute to a collective goal of raising awareness and building funds for this important cause.

Organisers hope the event will also contribute to a broader nationwide effort, with other Lions Clubs planning similar walks.

The goal is to collectively walk 15,000 km – roughly the length of New Zealand’s coastline – to highlight the widespread impact of diabetes.

Join the Lions and make a difference

Waihi Lions Club president David Parish encourages locals and visitors to take part. “Whether you’re walking for your health or walking to support those affected by diabetes, this event offers a wonderful opportunity to get involved and make a difference.

“It’s a great way to be active, raise awareness, and contribute to a cause that affects so many people in our community.”

The ‘Lap the Map’ walk will proceed rain or shine, so come prepared for the weather. Participants can walk as much or as little as they like and enjoy the stunning views around the Martha Mine Pit.
