Feeding families with sustainable venison

The weeks leading up to Christmas can be stressful for many Kiwi families, with rising costs and tighter budgets making it harder to put nutritious meals on the table.

That’s where Stoney Creek Hunt for Good comes in, helping to ease the burden by transforming responsibly harvested wild venison into high-quality mince that nourishes communities in need.

In 2024, it achieved a major milestone, surpassing its first-quarter 2025 goal by producing over 1000kg of mince - enough to provide 6750 servings to families around New Zealand.

For founder Jasper Osborne, the work is deeply personal.

“We’ve seen firsthand how tough things can get for families, especially at this time of year. Our mission is simple: to ensure more whānau have access to healthy kai that helps ease the burden on families' budgets. There’s no better feeling than knowing the work we’re doing is helping to take the pressure off.”

Osborne said their efforts aren’t just about providing meals - they’re about making a tangible difference for organisations and the people they serve.

One such partner, Under the Stars, which feeds the homeless and those in need in Tauranga, shared the impact of the venison donation.

“We are super grateful to Hunt for Good for their generous venison donation! This is going to make a huge difference to our organisation, being able to provide good quality protein in our meals without it costing the earth. Thank you so much for partnering with us,” said Ani Stace from Under the Stars.

She said this collaboration ensures vulnerable individuals have access to nutritious, high-quality kai - a necessity, especially as the holiday season approaches.

While the focus is on helping families, the journey wouldn’t be possible without the support of key partners like Stoney Creek, which has joined forces with Hunt for Good to make this vision a reality.

Its durable, purpose-built gear allows the team to operate in challenging conditions and ensures every effort is carried out with care for the environment.

Stoney Creek owner and CEO Brent McConnell also shared his excitement.

“We’re absolutely stoked to join forces with Jasper and the team on the ground. Stoney Creek Hunt for Good is providing a great natural food source for Kiwi families and communities that are in need, especially as we head into the challenges of the holiday season. Here at Stoney Creek, we’re all about experiences, providing for people, and protecting those things we’re passionate about. This is our way to give back to the communities that support us.

“The Hunt for Good team is such a good bunch, with a strong mission and purpose. This project tackles the pressing issue of deer numbers in rural areas, and it’s putting an incredible, tasty food source into the hands of people who will genuinely benefit from it. My wife Juanita and I, along with our entire Stoney Creek team, are proud to support this cause that makes a meaningful difference on so many levels.”

As families across the country prepare for the festive season, Stoney Creek Hunt for Good remains committed to providing nutritious venison mince to those who need it most.

With continued support, it is not just feeding people - it is creating connections, reducing waste, and ensuring a brighter, healthier future for Kiwi communities.
