Envirohub has announced a major achievement in its ongoing mission to reduce waste and promote sustainability, successfully diverting nearly two tonnes (1900 kg) of recyclable materials from local landfills in 2024.

The non-profit organisation has been working diligently throughout the year to educate the community, offer convenient recycling services, and encourage responsible waste management practices. The nearly two-tonne milestone highlights the collective efforts of local residents, businesses, and volunteers who have supported the group.

“We are thrilled to see the results of our 2024 recycling initiatives,” said Envirohub community co-ordinator Cathy Donnelly. “Nearly two tonnes of recyclable materials represents a significant reduction in waste and an important step forward in our fight against landfill expansion.

“This achievement is a direct result of the dedication and participation of the community, and we look forward to even greater success in the years to come.”

Envirohub’s recycling programmes in 2024 focused on collecting a variety of materials, including wine and beer bottle lids, coffee pods, oral healthcare products, batteries, printer cartridges, vape products, and jar lids, among other items. These materials were processed in an environmentally responsible manner to ensure maximum recycling efficiency.

By collaborating with local partners and offering drop-off points at its hub on 31B Glasgow St, Envirohub has made recycling more accessible for individuals and businesses alike.

“We’re delighted to add three further collection points for textiles such as children’s clothes, sheets, towels and T-shirts with our partners Impactex and Ripple, as well as cables and chargers with project partners AJ Demolition,” said Donnelly.

“We’re grateful to Tauranga City Council and Western Bay District Council for their support of our endeavours.”

Throughout the year, Envirohub has also hosted educational workshops, clean-up events, and awareness campaigns to further promote sustainable practices and recycling. The organisation remains committed to reducing the environmental impact of waste and looks forward to growing its reach in the coming years.

The nearly two tonnes of recycled materials will contribute to significant reductions in carbon emissions, as recycling conserves energy and raw materials compared with producing new items. The initiative also helps to reduce landfill waste, supporting a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

Looking ahead, Envirohub continues to focus on increasing recycling rates and plans to surpass its 2024 achievement with continued community support.
