Tauranga’s beloved Christmas in the Park event is back this year, bringing a day of fun, food, and festive spirit to Soper Reserve at Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
But the event isn’t just about celebrating the season — it’s also about supporting those in need during the holidays.
Organised by the Community Projects Charitable Trust, Christmas in the Park aims to help families struggling with the cost of living this festive season.
The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation, non-perishable food, or a wrapped gift. All donations collected will be distributed to charities across the region in time for Christmas.
Community Projects Charitable Trust representative Chris Duffy highlighted the impact of the rising costs on many families, noting Christmas can be a difficult time.
“We get numerous emails from people living on the breadline who are too proud or don’t feel they can ask for help. It’s a real struggle for many out there. A lot of people have said they just can’t afford Christmas this year.”
Duffy encouraged businesses and individuals who can donate to get involved.
“If you are in a position to help and want to be part of this kaupapa, this is your way of giving back.”
The donations will support a range of charities, including women’s refuges and community centres, with items tailored to the specific needs of each organisation.
Fellow Trust representative Rachelle Duffy said any type of gift was welcome.
“We make sure we give things to charities that they need and try to tailor our food packages and presents to each charity. If they know of a family with a child who is really into Lego but the family hasn’t been able to afford it, we will try to accommodate that.”
Now in its 10th year, Christmas in the Park has become an important community event, offering not only entertainment but also a chance for people to give back.
“There’s so much work that goes on behind the scenes, and we want to celebrate the people who’ve been doing this important mahi year-round. This event gives those charities a little extra support at a crucial time,” said Rachelle.
For those looking to help out, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Millie Guest, social media manager for the event, said volunteers were always needed to assist with setting up, collecting donations, and packing up the gifts and food to be distributed to charities.
In addition to the charitable donations, Christmas in the Park will feature a jam-packed schedule of family-friendly activities, live music, and entertainment. Local acts such as the Tuatara Collective, Big Band, Inachord (ladies choir), Indecisive, and A Night Of will perform throughout the day. There will also be a Santa’s Grotto, balloon animals, free face painting, pottery classes, weaving and sewing workshops, as well as backyard games and fun football activities for all ages.
For those looking to do some last-minute Christmas shopping, The Little Big Markets Christmas market will be on-site, offering an array of festive treats and unique gifts. And of course, Santa himself will make a grand entrance in a red convertible, with plenty of photo opportunities for kids.
“This is a family-friendly, fun day out to get you in the Christmas spirit, while also helping those who need it most,” Guest said.
