Health experts slam govt vaping quit plan

The government's plan to offer vaping starter kits through stop-smoking services is facing criticism from health experts concerned about potential long-term risks.

Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Chief Executive Letitia Harding has expressed deep concerns about the move, which allows stop-smoking services to begin distributing vaping kits next week.

Harding argues that vaping products, not approved as official smoking cessation tools, could lead to further health complications down the line.

"We support efforts to help smokers quit, but not by introducing another product that can also be harmful," Harding said.

She highlighted the government's plan's significant flaw as the absence of meaningful consultation with independent health experts, stakeholders, or the public.

"It leaves many questions unanswered. Why was there no proper engagement with health professionals or the wider community? This lack of detail is deeply concerning," she said.

A central concern for the Foundation is the lack of an exit strategy for smokers who transition to vaping.

Harding questioned how the government plans to ensure these individuals are not left with a new addiction to nicotine.

"There needs to be a clear pathway for people to move away from nicotine altogether," she said. "We see no evidence of that in the current proposal."

The Smokefree 2025 initiative, which aims to reduce smoking rates nationwide, should prioritize evidence-based strategies that help individuals quit nicotine entirely, Harding stressed.

Instead, the current approach risks merely swapping one addiction for another.

Harding also noted the importance of ongoing support for those who quit smoking, emphasizing that vapers need guidance to eventually give up vaping as well.

Without such support, she fears the plan could create more problems than it solves.

"We urge the government to rethink its approach," Harding said.

"This cannot simply be about shifting smokers from one form of nicotine to another. The focus should be on helping people break free from nicotine entirely."

The Foundation calls for a comprehensive review of the proposal, ensuring it aligns with long-term public health goals and addresses the potential unintended consequences of promoting vaping as a cessation tool.

Which Is Better

We all "know" for a fact that cigarette smoking has many health issues. I have no doubt that vaping also has some health issues, but which is better? Obviously, vaping is far better. Ideally it would be better to go cold turkey but not everyone will be able to do that. It's your choice.

Illusions

It is absurd to officially endorse vaping as a way to stop nicotine addiction, when the reputable, independent laboratories have all said it doesn't. The studies that say it does, are all sponsored by vested interests and they don't care at all about the health of a population.
I have met ONE person who said he stopped smoking thanks to vaping. When I asked him how long since he stopped vaping, he looked sheepish and admitted that he still vaped. Uninformed administrators buy into illusions and give those illusions offical authority. It's the same as the PM supporting co-governance because he has been persuaded that the TOW requires it. It doesn't, and it never did. Extremists are working their own agenda to remove Democracy and go to Tribal Rule by 2040. Meanwhile, some people are vaping away and feeling smug because they stopped smoking. It's the same illusion.

Vaping was initially introduced to give up smoking many years (over 20 years) ago in NZ. Vaping has absolutely helped many peopled from smoking cigarettes and it is the lesser of 2 evils as it has a lot fewer chemicals which we all know now. I'm not saying it's good for you by no means, but its far better than cigarette smoking. As for the nicotine within cigarettes and vape juice, you have a choice with vape juice. My vape juice contains 0% nicotine. I have a habit now but not an addiction. My husband has also used vape devices to quit smoking and neither of us have touched a cigarette for 6 years. We are significantly better off vaping, and we will cease the vaping in the near future. We and many others are the proof not some laboratory.
