There are plenty of spots to enjoy in the Bay this summer, whether that’s just for the day or overnight.

If you’re planning to freedom camp in Tauranga, it’s important you play your part in keeping our beautiful corner of New Zealand a safe and friendly destination.

Team Leader: Regulation Monitoring, Stuart Goodman, said it’s up to all of us to chip in and make it a reality.

“It’s a special time of year for many, especially as many switch on the ‘out of office’ emails and enjoy a well-earned break. It’s also the first time some people explore New Zealand or visit if they’re from overseas," Goodman said.

“Freedom camping is a popular way to take in the sights and sounds, but we’d really encourage people to get to know the rules before they set out on their trip to ensure everyone has an awesome summer.”

Specific locations across Tauranga have been set aside for freedom campers, with designated areas with clearly marked signage indicating any restrictions.

Freedom campers must also be in a certified self-contained vehicle, cannot stay more than two nights at any one location in a calendar month, cannot light fires and must remove all litter and waste.

“We don’t want to ruin anyone’s holiday, but our priority is keeping Tauranga safe and enjoyable for all. Our enforcement team are patrolling nightly to make sure freedom campers are aware of, and following the rules,” Goodman adds.

The infringement fee for not following the rules is $400. It increased last year, following the direction of the central government.

All freedom campers planning to visit Tauranga should take the time to visit the freedom camping webpage, where all the rules around freedom camping are listed.

Travelling in a non-self-contained vehicle? Book into a campground. Find out where you can book on Tourism Bay of Plenty’s website.

Council should have acted weeks/months ago to stop the dump site that is being created opposite the new skate park on the corner of Maunganui Rd and Hull Rd and another one in Greerton Park by the Marist rugby club rooms.
These vagrants should have been moved on as soon as they arrived because they have attracted more like minded individuals and it's now a growing trend. There are tents and bivouacs going up all around town in parks and reserves, which could be seen as intimidating by family groups.
It's not the genuine freedom campers in expensive vehicles that are the issue, it's the irresponsible vagrants that need to be hassled before they put down roots.

I know some of them vagrants you are referring to. Double dare you to call me that when I'm sharing a coffee with them.

Its not the freedom Campers

Unfortunately the Self-contained freedom camper's both Kiwis and Internationals are getting a bad rap when the majority are doing all things right.
Its time the council get out of their offices and take a look in their own community at where the problem is.

The pony club carpark in Papamoa as an example, with its multimillion-dollar views has been ruined over this Christmas period to Multiple vans and a 9M Bus with no COF or rego that has set up permanent camp. They are not self-contained, are loitering in groups and have not been approached to move on or fined.

I understand that times are tough but these people that are the ones creating a bad name for the real freedom campers and are doing this by choice with no desire to contribute to society.
