Sustainable Backyards is back and bigger than ever as the team at Envirohub BOP celebrate 20 years of championing sustainability in the Bay of Plenty.
“Throughout the entire month of March, Envirohub BOP is proud to present a jam-packed calendar of events that will inspire, educate, and connect communities across the region," said Sustainable Backyards Coordinator Te Ara Dirkse.
“Whether you’re a seasoned eco-warrior or just starting your sustainability journey, there’s something for everyone.
"Expect Upcycling Workshops, Benefit Concerts, bird themed Fun Runs, Film Screenings, Eco Markets, Bus Tours, guided Bush Walks, organic and permaculture Garden Tours, Clothing Swaps and so much more to come."
Dirkse said Sustainable Backyards is also launching a new annual event this coming March, teaming up with the Western Bay Wildlife Trust to help protect the local Kororā (Little Blue Penguin) population, who call the Bay of Plenty home.
“These tiny penguins have been facing growing threats from urban development and human activity, and the trust has been working hard to keep their nesting sites safe, reminding people of the importance of respecting the dog free zones, protecting and restoring habitat, and continuing the Penguin Monitoring program,” said Dirkse.

To support this fantastic cause, Sustainable Backyards is excited to host a family-friendly penguin themed fun run event, 'Waddle the Mount', on Saturday, March 29.
“It’s a great chance to get outdoors, learn more about the Kororā and fundraise for the trust’s ongoing penguin protection efforts," Dirkse said.
“Whether you walk or waddle around the base of The Mount, every step you take will help fund the Trust’s ongoing mahi.
“Come along, have fun, and make a difference for these amazing little penguins.”
