The public is being asked for ideas about where and when alcohol can be sold to be considered in a new policy that will affect both Tauranga City and the Western Bay of Plenty.
The survey is to enable the creation of a Local Alcohol Policy – a new policy available under the Alcohol Reform Bill expected to become law soon.
Members of the public are being asked to participate in a survey to determine Tauranga's alcohol policy.
The decision to work towards a common policy for Tauranga and the Western Bay came out of the councils' joint governance committee.
The survey will be available online and in hard copy from today. The public is asked for opinions on where and when alcohol can and should be sold, and the impact of drinking in their local neighbourhood.
Information from the survey will help inform the councils what the community wants in a Local Alcohol Policy regarding issues like the number and location of new licensed premises, and opening hours and other licensing conditions.
A Local Alcohol Policy can also determine whether further licenses should be issued, how close a new liquor outlet can be to an existing outlet, and how close a new liquor outlet can be to a church, a school, a child-care centre or a retirement village, for example.
The survey takes about 10–15 minutes and is open until Friday, 8 February 2013. It can be found at: www.tauranga.govt.nz or www.westernbay.govt.nz.
The draft policy will be subject to a formal consultation process during 2013.

I look at this situation from a different viewpoint. ASK YOURSELF: Why are there not several shops in the same area all selling crochet toilet roll holders? ANSWER: Cos nobody wants to buy them! WHY are there several alcohol shops in one area? Because there are enough people out there CREATING a market or a DEMAND for them - If people - the PUBLIC didn't purchase alcohol, these shops would go BUST, and the number of shops selling it would reduce to the level that the MARKET or DEMAND requires to fulfill such a demand. To prevent shops from selling products that the PUBLIC wish to purchase wont remedy the problems you wish to fix. All it will do is make life more inconvenient and more expensive for the public, and it allows YOU to have a say in other peoples lives and rights (which is possibly the WORST side effect) By demanding Council interference ALSO encourages council to interfere in your lives even more than they do now, and ALSO helps justify the council employ more interfering busybodies which in turn cost YOU in RATES. If you dont want the shops selling booze, then simply do not patronise them, but RESIST denying others just because YOU don't like it. REMEMBER: for you to enjoy freedom, first you must ensure that OTHERS are free.
