NZ Mountain Safety Council is calling on hikers and trampers to prepare thoroughly to avoid being caught out by the weather as Waitangi Day approaches.
With some people extending Waitangi Day into a long weekend and many planning outdoor adventures, MSC Chief Executive Mike Daisley is stressing the importance of planning ahead, packing gear for all conditions and changing trip plans where necessary.
“Don’t be lulled into the idea that summer means warm, sunny weather, especially if you’re going to higher altitudes. This summer has been marked by unseasonable weather, with some regions getting heavy rain, strong winds and even snow, so you need to be prepared for everything.”
Whether you are planning a day hike or overnight tramp, MSC recommends all walkers pack a waterproof jacket, warm layers, plenty of water and food, and a way to call for help. Keeping up to date with the weather forecast is another essential part of planning a trip.
“It’s tempting to stick to a plan when you’ve been preparing for months, but if the weather forecast is going to make your trip unsafe or unpleasant for your group, delay your plans. The same goes when you’re out and about – if the weather changes, make the call that will get you home safe. The mountain will be there for another day.”
Plan My Walk, MSC’s free trip planning website and app, is an easy way to get organised for a trip. It includes the latest MetService weather forecasts and warnings, any Department of Conservation alerts, and other essential safety information, as well as customisable gear lists.
“Plan My Walk has been designed as a freely available, easy-to-use tool to help hikers and trampers improve their planning, preparation and decision-making for a better and safer outdoor experience,” says Mike. "We encourage everybody to make good use of it."
