The highway between Matatā and Paengaroa in Bay of Plenty is closed due to flooding this morning.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 2 was closed due to flooding following a slip just west of Matatā.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 2 was closed between Kaokaoroa St and Herepu Rd, just west of Matatā, and a detour route was available via state highways 33, 30 and 34.
An NZTA spokeswoman said a significant amount of rain fell overnight in this area, which blocked recently cleared culverts and flooded the area under the rail bridge.
“NZTA contractors are on site working to clear debris and re-open the road this morning. It should be open by midday.”
The spokeswoman said the culverts were cleaned in the last couple of months, but there was a large volume of material brought down from the hills.
“Please follow the detour and allow extra time for your journey.”
The road was closed at 12.30am.
According to social media reports a line of trucks was waiting to get through.
More to come.

Poor information

Coming from Whakatane to Tauranga there is no warnings of road closed until you get to Matata. At which point you have to back track some distance to get onto the detour. But if you go from Tauranga to Whakatane. Signs along TEL warning you of detour, then road closed at the end of TEL. No back tracking required. This happens every time NZTA need to dispatch traffic management some what better.
Maybe put in larger culverts?

If the culverts are blocking up it is a sign of heavier rain than expected and this is happening more frequently. Analyse the likelihood and maybe put in larger culverts.
