Motorists are being advised to plan their travel as holiday traffic builds up on Sunday afternoon on State Highway 25 between Whitianga and Tairua.

"Due to holiday congestion, southbound road users can expect delays of between 20 and 30 minutes while travelling through this area," an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson said.

"Road users are advised to plan their journey accordingly and allow extra time."

Traffic on SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi, and between Katikati and Tauranga, as well as traffic on SH29 Kaimai Range, is also expected to be heavy this afternoon.
