Tauranga teen has eyes set on NZ Army

E: Overall Excellence Award Winner Tyron Finnerty running through the middle of his fellow camp participants in camp activity

Attending Blue Light’s Life Skills Camp in Trentham has reinforced 17-year-old Tyron Finnerty’s ambition to join the New Zealand Army and earned him top honours.

The Tauranga Boys’ College student took part in the five-day programme from 10–14 February 2025, an experience that cemented his aspirations and earned him the Overall Excellence Award.

Reflecting on the camp, Finnerty said, “The marching is my main takeaway. I will be able to use this learning for when I join the army. I really appreciate the connections I made with the military staff, especially when they suggested I sign up for the army as soon as possible.”

The recognition came as a surprise. “I didn’t realise I was going to win this award… when my name was called out, I was caught off guard but was able to receive it with a big smile,” he said.

His dedication and perseverance stood out to Blue Light and Defence Force staff. Kawana Marsden, a Blue Light mentor on camp, praised his attitude. “Tyron showed respect for the staff on camp, he took initiative, supported his peers, and completed instructed tasks. Before camp, Tyron’s aim was to join the army, and when he was put in that environment, it encouraged him to keep doing his best.”

For other teenagers considering the Life Skills Camp, Finnerty offered advice: “Put your best foot forward even if you don’t want to be there. You will get good things out of it if you keep pushing through.”

Finnerty is completing his final year at Tauranga Boys’ College while applying for the New Zealand Army, with the goal of becoming an infantryman.

Blue Light’s Life Skills Camp, run in partnership with the New Zealand Defence Force, helps young people develop confidence, leadership, and resilience through adventure-based experiential learning.
