It’s time to check you’re enrolled to vote in this year’s local elections.
Over the next two weeks, the 3.6 million people on the electoral roll will be sent an enrolment pack in the mail to check their details are up to date.
“The local elections are held by a postal vote. Make sure you’re listed at the address where you live so you get your voting papers in the mail this October,” says Anusha Guler, deputy chief executive operations.
“Māori voters can choose to be on the Māori roll or the general roll for the local elections. You can’t change rolls in the three months before the elections, so if you would like to switch rolls, you need to do it by midnight, July 10.
“Councils make decisions that affect our daily lives and communities on things like rates, rubbish collection, libraries, parks and public transport. It’s important that you’re enrolled and ready to have your say,” says Guler.
“Check your details when you get your pack. If they’re correct you’re all set to vote for the people who will represent you on city, district and regional councils.
“If your details need to be updated, you can change them on the form in the pack and send it back. People can also enrol or update their details online at vote.nz.
“If you don’t get a pack by April 14, it means you’re not enrolled, or you need to update your address on the electoral roll.
“This year, we’re also asking people to update their details with an email address and phone number to make it easier to move to digital communications in the future,” says Guler.

Is this so that we can ELECT people into council with voting privileges, or should we not worry about that any more..?

Tauranga city will not be having an election . Nor will there be a referendum on Maori wards or the back door paying and appointing voting rights to the unelected. Certainly not a saving of costs . So when we finally get to vote again it will be interesting if any councillors who did this will survive. Nor their lack of restructuring or cost savings to mitigate 12.5 percent rate rise. High staff ratio and costs and high rates and spending further indebtedness on nice to haves that we actually can't afford . Kick it down the road again

The Maori has been here long time before the Europeans arrive. The Maori maintained their lands, resources, water/marine Kai Moana, working with their own systems. etc TOW.
Since time has past we all know the corruption from the NZ pakeha governments did to Maori, including race based disadvantaging the Maori people. We now have come what I believe is a turnaround to now be compensations, and progress righting the wrongdoing.
How do we come together to live and work for everyone? There are ways we are already doing this, co governance, and Maori wards are so important for all of us. Lets imagine the opposite, Maori have their lands back and control is only Maori, stoping all none Maori from the use of parks and reserve, access to beaches, keeping all income from their adventures not paying taxes on these, is this ok for you?
