A young Kiwi athlete is putting himself to the ultimate test, running the length of Aotearoa in just 18 days to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health.

Blake Schimanski is embarking on an extraordinary journey, running from Bluff to Cape Reinga - a gruelling distance of over 2,000km - as part of his campaign, Run Aotearoa.

Starting off on March 31, with an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 for New Zealand charity I Am Hope, Blake is determined to support their mission of creating positive societal change in how mental health is perceived and addressed.

This challenge holds deep personal meaning for Blake.

In 2018, he lost a close friend due to mental health struggles, a tragedy that continues to fuel his commitment to breaking the stigma and encouraging open conversations.

To honour his late friend, Blake’s campaign carries the hashtag #never4get, serving as both a tribute and a call to action.

Covering an average of 110km per day, Blake will push his body and mind to the limit.

His endurance and resilience have been tested before -most notably in 2023 when he completed the 100km Taupō Ultramarathon, raising $5000 for I Am Hope.

With several marathons and ultramarathons already under his belt, he is no stranger to pushing boundaries.

However, Run Aotearoa represents his biggest challenge yet.

“This is more than just a run - it’s about using my platform to make a difference,” said Blake.

“Mental health affects so many people, and if this challenge encourages even one person to reach out for help, then it’s worth every step.”

With public support, Blake hopes to reach his fundraising target and inspire others to speak openly about mental health.

Donations to Run Aotearoa can be made via his fundraising page, with all proceeds going directly to I Am Hope to support their vital work.
