The Great K Valley Cycle Adventure has been cancelled today due to the weather forecast, organisers said.

The popular event, exploring the trails of Kōpūrererua Valley in the heart of Tauranga, was due to take place today for the fifth year.

Organised by Tauranga Sunrise Rotary, the unique scavenger hunt on two wheels combines map reading and puzzle-solving by bike while also raising funds for local organisations.

"We have had to cancel it due to today's weather forecast," Rotary club member and organiser Michele Beaton said on Sunday morning.

The event had previously been postponed from its original date of April 13, and today was the alternative date set.

"All the people who registered have been reimbursed already this morning."

Beaton said there is a possibility the event may be held in later 2025, but plans haven't been made yet.

“K Valley”, as Kōpūrererua Valley is often referred to, is packed with history, wildlife and great cycling and walking trails, as well as sites of significance to Ngāi Tamarāwaho.

In 2023, more than 200 cyclists took on the adventure. In 2024, more than 40 teams competed, with four to six people per team.

“The event is organised by our Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise club’s environment group and is aimed at raising awareness of the historical, ecological, carbon-sink and recreational value of this amazing reserve, the largest urban wetland reserve in New Zealand and possibly in Australasia,” Beaton said.

“There’s also a fundraising side to this, though because we keep ticket prices low to make sure the event is accessible to most, amounts raised have not been huge."

In 2025, the club planned to raise funds through the Great K Valley Cycle Adventure to go towards the Kōpūrererua Valley Rotary Centennial Trust’s annual planting of thousands of native plants.
