Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services has wrapped up a successful patrol season, with calm surf conditions and thankfully, no tragic incidents.

Director of lifeguarding Lucy Scown said the 2024–2025 season saw no tragic occurrences and fewer surf rescues thanks to proactive safety measures.

“Zero rescues is always the goal.”

The club recorded 889 preventative actions and more than 53,700 safety interventions, including public education, beach signage and on-the-ground advice.

There were still three major rescues, including one on March 9 when a woman was seriously injured on the Orokawa Track. Lifeguards responded after a call from a member of the public, working with SurfCom (Surf Lifesaving New Zealand’s communications hub) and the Aerocool Rescue Helicopter.

Emotional demands

Scown said the emotional demands of the lifeguarding role are always taken seriously and all members have access to mental health counselling.

“Our lifeguards really enjoyed connecting with locals and visitors across our three patrol locations.

“We’re proud of the work our team has done this season.”

Over the summer, 78 patrolling members contributed 2413 volunteer hours, with nearly 4700 patrol hours logged. Lifeguards responded to three major first aid incidents, 46 minor injuries, nine searches and four assists to safety.

The club’s search and rescue squad continued with training, including multi-agency exercises to stay sharp and ready for off-season callouts.

Meanwhile, the club hosted the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Series and North Island Surf Boat Championships, attracting more than 40 clubs to Waihī Beach.

Patrols

Although regular patrols are now paused until Labour Weekend, beachgoers are reminded to stay vigilant.

The Deck Kitchen and Bar is closed until Labour Weekend aside from special events. The clubrooms and accommodation block are available for bookings including meetings, conferences and training opportunities.
