A grassroots event tackling men’s mental health is set to return to Tauranga on July 11, after a groundswell of support helped launch it last year.

Locally founded and organised by Cassandra Hogan, He. was created to spark honest conversations about men’s mental wellbeing.

“We shouldn’t have to fundraise to make mental health services accessible,” Hogan said.

“But the truth is, the system is stretched, and people are falling through the cracks. That’s why the community has stepped up.”

The inaugural He. event in 2023 drew overwhelming backing from musicians, artists, businesses and families.

This year’s follow-up promises to be “bigger, louder, and more determined”, Hogan said.

The July 11 event at Tauranga’s Cargo Shed will bring together live music, visual art, storytelling and open mic sessions.

Among the featured speakers are former rugby league player Russell Packer, MSFT Productions and Spark That Chat founder Jack Jensen, mental health advocate Corey Choat of @runningforsal, and Paul Anthony, founder of Forge Men’s Group in Whakatāne.

Proceeds will go directly to Gumboot Friday and I Am Hope – two initiatives focused on delivering free counselling and mental health support to young people.

Major sponsors include Fulton Hogan, Taylor Brothers, Batched Cocktails and Alchemy & Tonic.

Mental health statistics in New Zealand remain grim.

Men continue to make up the majority of suicide deaths, while stretched services often leave those in crisis facing months-long waitlists.

Hogan said community action like He. is essential.

“We’ve had people come up after the event saying it was the first time they felt like they could open up,” she said. “That’s how we know this work matters.”

Tickets are available through Humanitix and participating partners. Attendees are encouraged to “come as they are” – and to bring their stories, their support and their hope.
