What's on today?

Head to the Whānau Weekend on the Waterfront Kids Market at 109 The Strand. This free, family-friendly event features youth-led market stalls, food trucks, face painting, weaving workshops, backyard games, sports activities, and live entertainment — all in honour of Matariki. It's a hands-on, joyful experience for tamariki and whānau alike.

Get ready to throw horns and bang heads — Overload 5 is back, bringing Bay of Plenty’s loudest tribute festival to Totara Street this June. With six powerhouse acts channelling rock and metal legends like Slipknot, The Prodigy, System of a Down, Metallica, and more, this is a night built for true fans of chaos, riffs, and nostalgia. Kicking off at 5pm, the lineup includes Kaosis, The Feeders, The Firestarters, Megadeth (tribute), Tonedown, and Brews Brothers — each bringing their own high-octane homage to the stage. More than just music, Overload 5 is raising funds for Women’s Refuge, supporting vital services for survivors of domestic violence. Celebrate Matariki with a fun and creative poi making workshop that brings a touch of the stars to your weekend. In this hands-on session, tamariki will design and craft their own constellation-inspired poi, while exploring rhythm, coordination, and the cultural art of poi.All materials are provided, and the workshop runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm as part of a series of free Saturday activities for kids in the city centre.

Matariki art celebration at The Incubator

Discover the work of Jordyn Daniels, a contemporary Māori artist whose new exhibition opens at Okorore – Ngā Toi Māori – Whare Taonga Gallery and Studios on Saturday 14 June 2025 at 10am. A graduate of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Daniels holds a Diploma in Māori Weaving and a Bachelor in Māori Visual Art. Her paintings weave together customary and contemporary Māori art forms, drawing inspiration from mātauranga Māori, atua wāhine, whakapapa, and the natural world. Using natural and recycled materials, her work features traditional patterns such as kowhaiwhai, whakairo, tukutuku, and tāniko. Each piece reflects her commitment to cultural integrity while exploring new expressions of identity and connection.
