Parking in Mount Maunganui North is back on Tauranga City Council’s agenda.
It comes more than a year after the council put the brakes on controversial plans to introduce paid parking in the area, following strong opposition from businesses.
The council said in a statement this week it was asking the community for ideas to balance the parking needs of everyone who “lives, works, plays and visits” Mount Maunganui.
It said ongoing parking issues, including 100% occupancy at peak times, had highlighted the need for a parking management plan.
Parking strategy manager Reece Wilkinson said while the matter had been discussed before, it was time to start afresh.
Input from residents, businesses and visitors would be used to shape the plan.
“We want to know what’s working well, what’s not, and what ideas you’ve got to make it work better. Whether it’s tried and tested solutions or out-of-the-box ideas, nothing is off-limits.
“We’re open to suggestions, from time limits to yellow line markings in tight streets, and anything else that springs to mind, as long as it’s realistic.”
The areas of focus included from Adams Ave, near Mauao, to Sutherland Ave.
Wilkinson said people could also share feedback and ideas about other areas in the Mount where parking was a concern.
Tauranga deputy mayor Jen Scoular, the Mauao/Mount Maunganui ward councillor, said it was a chance for everyone to share their views.
“As a biker, my best suggestion is to get out of your car, but for those who need to drive, here’s the chance to have your say.
“I have heard some people comment that we don’t need to change what’s currently there, but let’s ask the community for feedback.”
People could give feedback via the council’s website before July 25, and there will also be in-person feedback events added.
As reasons for revisiting the issue, the website said lots of new development was planned for the area.
The previous proposal would have introduced paid parking in the retail area of Maunganui Rd and along the beachfronts.
While paid parking discussions were put on ice, the council planned to take a tougher stance on people flouting time limits.
Tauranga has paid public parking in several areas and parking buildings in the CBD.

it's a TCC world.
So what's next, taxing us for the air that we breathe, the physical body space we use.
You wish.
What part of we do not want you to continue on your path of greed and nonsense do you not understand.
I know a lot of councils around the land are not well thought of, but TCC has to be top of the list.

"the need for a parking management plan" aka let's make some money off the shoppers. Surely having all the parks full is a great sign for the businesses. Supply more parking, don't go charging people.

Start charging for boat trailer parking. Why should they get the equivalent of 3 parks for free? Do they really have to launch in the heart of the Mounts tourist area?
Who are those people that makes them so special?
Enforce time limit parking on weekends. But make it reasonable, two hours or so.
Tow offenders vehicles.
Have resident only parking areas.
Have a cheap shuttle from Tauranga CBD.
The status quo….

….is and should remain. If you’re going to look at parking at the Mount, don’t give the job to a cyclist or Jen Scoular, she has already told us her position on cars. A cheap solution would be to revisit all the streets which had parking spaces removed by yellow dotting half the legitimate spaces. My guess is that about 200 were removed. Then in the narrow streets look for opportunities to construct behind the kerb parking. Charging for parking on Marine Parade and the mall is a stupid suggestion and whoever the latest person to suggest it should be laughed out of town.
Parking at the Mount works well and costs very little to maintain. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Thank you for the compliment, and I return it. Funny how many of us 'out here' could run a better council :-)
Yes, Abba, but also Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, quite diverse taste, including a lot of Les Mis, think TCC 'the injustices faced by the poor and marginalized'...or Peter, Paul & Mary 'Blowin' in the wind' - "how many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn't see"
"how many ears must one man have, before he can hear people cry". This last should be played at full volume in every corner of ever floor of the monument to greed and self servitude.
Leave it.

Don't kill downtown Mount, like you've done to downtown Tauranga, leave it alone!
Parking meters are on their way ....
Posted on 03-07-2025 09:37 | By Murray.Guy
Tauranga City Council staff have long had the agenda to apply curb-side parking metres throughout all of our regions shopping and business precincts.
Mount Maunganui CBD and surrounds represent a significant attraction in competition with the downtown Tauranga CBD and waterfront, and there is no doubt the imposition of parking charges will undermine the attractiveness of the Mount.

Shadow1 is correct, they did the same thing in Tauranga, removed carparks everywhere. These clowns have no idea, wrecked Tauranga & now want to spread their magic at the Mount.

That's an absolutely BRILLIANT reply. That certainly had me doing a good belly laugh (I sincerely apologize for any images that may manifest). That is one of THE best posts I've read for TCC here. Even morepork would be proud of that one and laughing. I needed a good laugh - THANK YOU.
Car Park

There was a perfectly good car park in the centre of the town. Council in there wisdom made it a skate park !!! I can only think they are trying to put people off owning cars as they have done the same in Tauranga on the strand. Are they short sighted, plain stupid or is there a agenda?

Provide more parking using the hard earned money we pay in council rates
Open coronation park

Every 2nd weekend you allow markets at the park that are not rate paying. Metres from Main Street cafes and stores. Move them and open up parking especially long term for staff of these businesses. It’s not rocket science.
