Update, 5.30pm: A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a school bus in the rural Bay of Plenty community of Ruatoki, south of Whakatāne.
Police said the motorcyclist died at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Ruatoki Valley Rd and Number 1 Rd.
No other injuries were reported.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 3pm.
Ruatoki Valley Rd remained closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducts a scene examination, and detours are in place.
Fire and Emergency NZ was called at 3.03pm and responded with two appliances, one from Tāneatua and one from Whakatāne.
“We do have one appliance still at the scene assisting police and ambulance. There was one fatality,” a spokesman said.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said it sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle to the crash, but directed NZME to police for further information.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
Earlier, 3.47pm: Emergency services are attending a vehicle crash in Ruatoki, south of Whakatāne.
“The two-vehicle crash was reported to emergency services just after 3pm,” police said.
“Initial indications are that there are serious injuries.”
Ruatoki Valley Road is closed at the intersection with Number 1 Road following a crash.
Fire and Emergency NZ have two appliances at the scene.
“We have sent fire trucks from Tāneatua and Whakatāne stations.”
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
