Emergency services are at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the State Highway 2 and Wairoa Road intersection near Bethlehem.
A police spokesperson said they were called at about 4.20pm.
“Both vehicles are blocking the road.”
A SunLive reader on their way home said it looked like a car trying to turn onto the highway was hit by another car.
“There are at least one police car, two rapid response St John vehicles, two ambulances and two fire engines.”
They also said they saw three police vehicles at the scene.
Fire and Emergency NZ said they were received a report of a vehicle crash.
Fire crews from the Tauranga and Greerton fire stations attended.
“We did respond with two fire trucks but weren’t required and left it with police.”
It is unknown at this stage if there are any injuries.
Google Maps live traffic updates showed Tauranga city-bound traffic is backed up from Wairoa Rd to Barrett Rd in Whakamārama on SH2.
For traffic heading out of the city on SH2 it is backed up to the Waihi Rd on-ramp from the Wairoa Bridge.

Terrible intersection

Terrible intersection. Cars often have to slow or cede to cars turning right out of wairoa rd onto sh2. So many near misses. About time it was made a left only exit, trucks & cars can turn around at station Rd to re-enter highway or use underpass much safer
30 odd yrs ago a roundabout was planned for that area to accommodate when the land changed from farm to industrial use & for all the heavy vehicles Station Rd was gonna have but that idea got shelved , and literally cancelled altogether when Station Rd slipped into the river.
How convenient to council & nzta
Te Puna Station Road

If Te Puna Station Road was reopend most traffic could of been diverted around the crash, under the bridge, along Station Road, onto Te Puna Road and back to SH2 at the roundabout.
Te Puna Station Road closure is non -sensicle.
Masterplan

The TCC have a Masterplan to alleviate the traffic congestion at the Wairoa Rd Intersection. They are currently spending $650 million building a Museum and Library Complex in the CBD
These attractions will result in much less traffic heading to Omokoroa in the evening "rush hour" as commuters will wish to dwell an hour or two in the Civic Precinct before heading off home to watch Hillary and Jeremy on TV
Container Trucks

This intersection is very dangerous and needs a massive upgrade. The container trucks are looking at increasing the traffic here if it goes ahead. It's only going to get worse.
