Sword threats lead to major police operation

A man is due to appear in court today after an armed standoff in Mount Maunganui.

Police were called to a “family-harm related” in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday that led to a 13-hour standoff between police and the alleged offender.

A police spokesperson said they were called to an address at 7.15am where a man with a sword was threatening a family member.

“Three occupants of the address exited safely upon police arrival. The man was engaging with police but remained uncooperative.”

Police said cordons were put in place to contain the address.

A number of police staff were called to assist, including the Police Negotiation Team and the Armed Offenders Squad.

“Around 8.45pm, the man was tasered and taken into custody without further incident,” said police.

A man, 32, is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court today, charged with assaulting a person with a stabbing/cutting instrument, threats to kill, assault on a family member and possession of utensils.
