Residents and staff at Radius Althorp in Pyes Pā had a busy September collecting donations for the Tauranga Foodbank, working together to ensure those struggling in the community receive the support they need.

Each year, the team at Tauranga’s Radius Althorp comes together to gather donations and make a special delivery to the foodbank. This year their annual effort was part of Radius Care’s nationwide Kindness Revolution event. The initiative is designed to foster community spirit and highlight the powerful ripple effect of simple acts of kindness.

“When choosing where the donations would go, the team reflected on several local charities in the Tauranga area,” said diversional therapist Erica Meyer.

Meyer said that the Tauranga Foodbank stood out due to the critical role it plays in supporting individuals and families experiencing hardship.

“The service not only provides immediate help but also represents a network of compassion,” she said.“Althorp felt Tauranga Foodbank was the right choice for this year’s donation and an organisation that deeply aligns with the spirit of kindness.”

For residents and staff alike, being part of a community-focused initiative holds deep meaning.

“It is an honour to support a cause that is so vital during these challenging times,” said Althorp resident Irene Tierney. “Contributing to this effort brings me great satisfaction, knowing it can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

Althorp resident Flo Buyers shared a personal perspective that underscores the importance of food support. Having experienced hunger firsthand as a child evacuee during the German bombings in Belfast, she knows what it means to go without.

“My siblings and I were evacuated to Ballywater as refugees, and the hardship we endured has stayed with me,” Buyers said.“That’s why I’m deeply grateful to contribute to this worthy cause. It’s an opportunity to give back and help those in need.”

Althorp staff also played a key role in the donation drive. “It truly warms my heart to be able to support the community,” said team member Becky King. “Being part of such an important initiative is both humbling and fulfilling, and it’s a privilege to contribute to the well-being of those around us.”
