Top up your wellbeing

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Art of Living is offering free meditation and breathwork sessions nationwide.

As part of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week from October 6-12, the Art of Living Foundation is offering free online breathwork and meditation sessions to help people top up their wellbeing.

The sessions, on the theme of “Top Up Together”, are designed to promote mental wellness through shared, community-based practices. Held daily at 12pm and 7pm, they aim to boost emotional resilience, reduce stress, and enhance social connection, which are all key factors in long-term mental health.

The Art of Living is a global leader in wellbeing practices, and its New Zealand chapter offers weekly group sessions across the country. A recent review of 58 clinical trials found that simple breathing techniques, such as slow diaphragmatic breathing and alternate-nostril breathing, can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

“These breath techniques are easy to learn and easy to practise, anywhere, anytime,” said Andrew Melville, national co-ordinator for the Art of Living Foundation. “They’re suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness.”

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week is shining a light on the collective aspect of the national mental health awareness “Top Up” campaign, as recent research shows that a shared, community-based approach to wellbeing yields the most sustained, long-term benefits.

“Social connection is crucial for our wellbeing,” Melville said. “It brings purpose and a sense of belonging to our lives, helps us feel valued, and makes us happier and more secure. Evidence shows that activities involving social interaction matter — actions like volunteering, shared learning, physical activity, cultural practices, and community.”

The free sessions are open to everyone and require no prior experience. Registration is available online.

The Art of Living also offers a range of in-person and online programmes for adults, children, teens, and workplaces, focusing on meditation, mindfulness, and emotional regulation.
