Multicultural Tauranga launched a project this month to mark the beginning of publishing a 10-book series created by immigrant writers in the community.

“The Multicultural Storybook Project uses children’s literature to build empathy, preserve cultural heritage and help young readers understand the beauty of migration and identity,” said project lead Khanh Ngoc Le (Annie).

More than 60 people attended the vibrant October 11 launch, enjoying an afternoon of stories, music, art and delicious multicultural food – a joyful celebration of Tauranga’s diversity.

“We believe this initiative has a positive impact on local families, promoting understanding, inclusion and pride in our diverse backgrounds,” said Le.

Two books were introduced: Home Is in Our Hearts by Khanh Ngoc Le (Annie), a poetic tribute to family bonds that stretch across oceans, and The Story of Two Best Friends by Ratna Seemakurthi, a touching tale of friendship, heritage, and finding belonging in a new land.

Both authors shared heartfelt reflections on how their cultural roots shape their writing and family life in New Zealand.

Multicultural Tauranga hoped the project would inspire more local immigrants to share their stories, to help children nationwide celebrate difference, kindness and the shared home we build together.
