Tauranga City Councils core management staff are having to re-apply for their jobs as part of the current restructuring process.
Four management positions for a Chief Executive Advisory Unit, Strategy Group, Organisational Services Group, Infrastructure Services Group, Regulatory and Community Services Group have been advertised.
Tauranga City Council management have to reapply for their jobs in a council reshuffle.
Current management comprises of customer and environmental services manager Peter Frawley, city directions manager and deputy CEO Christine Jones, city services manager Ian McDonald and business services manager Dean Riley.
Christine Jones' job is now general manager of strategy while city services manager Ian McDonald's job is general manager infrastructure services.
Business services manager Dean Riley's job is split to create a new group manager for organisational services and a lower tier job for an information and technology manager.
Customer and environmental services manager Peter Frawley's job is now general manager for community and environmental services.
The appointment of the new group managers will be made by the new CEO. Interviews for the CEO begin next week, with the appointment expected to be announced next month.
Current CEO Leigh Auton was hired to complete the restructuring process following the death of Ken Paterson last June.
'The general principle was if the job description changed by more than 25 per cent then the job had to be advertised on the open market,” says Mayor Stuart Crosby.
'When you drill down into the detail, activities have been shifted around the different groups so that's triggered the 25 per change, which then triggers the requirement for the job to be advertised on the open market.
'The important thing is that we will appoint a CEO hopefully in not too distant future - and that new CEO will be part of the appointment process of that new senior management team, because they will be his or her senior management team, not Leigh's.
'So it's critical whoever it is plays a very strong role in the appointment of particularly those top four.”
The council has one more interview on its short list for the new CEO, before the council makes its decision, says Stuart. It is expected to take a couple of weeks.
The council is also looking for a chief financial officer, which will be a restructured version of the financial controllers job held by Paul Davidson, and a new communication manager after former communications manager Elizabeth Hughes resigned last year.

Instead of cutting the jobs, just make the salaries more realistic. Compare the pay of a journalist at a newspaper to a communications officer at Council. Think you'll find the Council jobs are way overpaid. Then compare the qualifications of a number of Council staff with teachers. Think you'll find the Council staff are way overpaid. So rather than job losses, take a look at pay reductions that will make everyone (maybe not the overpaid ones) happy.

Try comparing like with like. The council counter staff get much less than s kindly teacher. Likewise, a school principal receives more than a council manager. A secondary school teacher worth a good degree gets way more than most council staff. I get a bit tired of people ago have cracks at local body staff who can't fight back.
This lot are not TCC ratepayers friends !!

These TCC jobs are to a large degree irrelevant and looking at the terrible lamentable performances of the incumbents over the last three years they would have a cheek to apply for the new positions. Salaries @ $200,000 are way over the top for what is involved.Hope the CEO takes that on board when selecting any seat warmer.

I was referring to more senior council staff with the equivalent of say a bachelor's degree. In a school or at a newspaper these people would be on maybe $60,000 but there is a large number at Council on $80,000 plus, even $100,000 plus. By the way a kindy teacher gets about $45 to $50,000. Perhaps you can tell us how much the senior council library staff get paid?

Council staff restructuring is long overdue. Successive councils over many years have flatly refused to instruct the CEO to carry out a staff audit and restructuring excercise which is why current staff numbers are so inflated. Because it has not been done for so long it is going to hurt most staff in some way or another. If TCC are genuine in their efforts to reduce council expenditure then in future staff audits should be carried out every three years. This is what most large corporates do and also a number of government departments. This keeps the salary bill to a realistic level as well as increasing efficiency. Salary levels should be looked at and compared with similar jobs with similar qualifications in like organistations in the private and public sector and adjust salaries accordingly. Some salaries would increase but I believe many would decrese.
