More beachside shade and parking

More shade along the beaches and parking at the beachfront are two of the most requested improvements in the council's Coastal Profile Survey.

A running tally of the survey forms received so far suggest Tauranga is a city of eco warriors – although Tauranga City Council does confirm the survey results are unscientific and purely to generate feedback.

The survey, asking people if they are a beleaguered parent or a bronze goddess, has also been labelled ‘shameful, incorrect and not really funny,' by one anonymous commenter.

Despite this TCC reports the survey is generating some essential feedback with most saying more shade trees are needed along the coastline.

People also want more car parking and there have been a few comments suggesting mobile shops shouldn't take up so many prime parking spots.

The survey suggests there is a lot of support for the dune restoration programme but there are different opinions about the preferred balance of native versus exotic vegetation.

The council says it will try to post all comments anonymously on their website.

Tauranga City Council parks staff will be at Tay Street reserve tomorrow between 10am and 2pm as part of their review of coastal management.

This is the second of three drop in days discussing topics such as trees, mobile shops and dune care – with anyone who attends and fills in the form in with a chance to win any iPad Mini.

Beware the tree chopping brigade

Those of us who value the scenery provided by trees may be concerned at reading the other Sunlive story on trees. Looks like council will agree to give them the chop on health grounds. I think this means people can use health as the reason and get trees chopped down.

parking charges

Put parking charges for stayers over 2 hours in peak season to provide cash to go back into upkeep and tree planting etc so we can enjoy these beautiful beaches!
