Pilot Bay walkway tenders closing

Tenders for building the Pilot Bay boardwalk and walkway are expected to close this week.

The tender documents for the first section of walkway from the northern end of the Sailsbury Wharf car park to the boat ramp at the base of Mauao were released last month.

A new boardwalk will be constructed along Pilot Bay.

A second tender will be called for the cantilevered walkway section along the seafront of the carpark.

Project Manager Cameron Waugh says the tender has been split into two as the cantilevered section over the beach requires more engineering detail.

The successful tenderer for the main project is expected to be announced later this month, with construction expected to begin in April.

The proposal follows public intent as expressed in the earlier public submission process.

The large grass area at the Salisbury Wharf end of the bay used for many events is to be kept, with the walkway passing between the road and the Norfolk Pine trees.

A combination of treatments will be used on the track. Brushed concrete will be used at intersections or connections with five pedestrian crossings planned for The Mall. The bulk of the walkway will be timber.

Tauranga City Council has committed $295,000, and the Port of Tauranga has pledged $200,000 for the project.

The width of the boardwalk will vary with a maximum of three metres.

The plan here is to eliminate the grass, and replace with tarseal ... or is it treated timber, that will lead to a speedy erosion of the foreshare ... will IWI consesate for teh loss of enjoyment as a grievance claim? Hope so.

Then what do you get? a nice picnic on the tarseal, walking the plank or something, neither is good at all.

Over $450 million in debt...and still the Council have problems distinguishing between "want it" and "need it".

Timber from the RENA

My undersanding is that Port of Tauranga have generously offered to provide some of the salvaged timber from the RENA to creat this boardwalk-will be great for wheelchairs, prams, mobility scooters etc and others who are currently prevented from enjoying the harbour side of our great city

About time

Wish they would hurry up and build this walk way, and get rid of all those messy little boats that litter the water front.

What tenders?

The normal way TCC operate here is that they decide that there is only one tenderer then after that pretend that a tender is happening meanwhile all has already been decided. As they say ... "It's our job to be fair ..."!

Departing grass

Well a "board-walk" of timber, tarseal or concrete (like the really lovely slab on the strand "beach front" ... yeah right (TUI AD) will remove a lot of grassed area that many in the summer enjoy, none will sit on the slab of concrete or seal they will all have to move nearer the sand/water, in doing so they will add to the spped of removal of the grass and therefore the sand. The beach is already washing away above and below the water line now so this will but happen a little faster now. Second plan is to remove 30-40 car parks to dump the slab a concrete between teh trees and road, there is not a lot of room for that to happen, if done then: 1. Parking is already a "MAJOR" problem now, 2. the concrete will be an attraction for bikes skate boarders and the like, no place for families, picnis and so on 3. Concrete will be lifted by the tree roots and broken up soon enough. Just another marvoleously cunning plan from TCC to take something that is just fine now and "fix it"! Who lets these clowns out of the cage anyway?
