Merivale residents are pleading with Tauranga City Council to ensure the suburb maintains its original identity and does not become known as Parkvale.
The plea was made to Monday's Tauranga City Council Projects and Monitoring Committee meeting by Merivale Community Services manager Graham Cameron.

Merivale had its name changed to Parkvale by the NZ Post office in 1961 as there was already a Merivale in Christchurch, says Graham.
Parkvale also infiltrated other government databases, where it lurks to this day, making it difficult to eradicate.
The post office at Merivale closed in 1988 following an armed robbery, removing the need in many local residents' opinion to retain the name.
There are no Parkvales in the phone book, but there are eight Merivales.
Councillors agreed to put it in the system.

Why change it from Merivale. so what if there are other Merivale suburbs in other towns.......... Also with post codes now they wont get mixed up. TCC you are just wanting to spend more money changing it.

My address has been Parkvale since 1961 and I see no reason to change it now. You say there are pleas to change it to Merivale however no one has asked my opinion and everyone I have spoken to about it hopes the Parkvale name is kept.
What's in a name?

Merivale is always going to be Merivale named or not, the character of the place is set in stone and will not change.
