Tauranga City Council has received a petition to halt construction of the pathway from Hartford Avenue to Palm Beach Boulevard.
SunLive reported last week residents in the Royal Palm Beach Estate were angered about the 'lack of consultation” on the pathway approved for development in 2006.
The pathway is one of the 10 links, 32km in total, running from Papamoa to Bethlehem and follows on from the recently installed southern section of the pathway, providing the link between the northern and southern sections.
TCC reports it has received the petition and mailed feedback forms to residents in a wider section of neighbouring properties to give them a chance to respond.
This from this week's Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin - week starting April 2.
City Parks
- Mauao base track resurfacing work will go on hold over the Easter break. The track has remained open throughout the resurfacing work.
City Waters
- A suspected water main leak in Willow Street will be investigated tonight and repairs will be carried out as required.
- A minor sewer overflow at Bayfair last week exacerbated conditions in the Omanu Golf Course open drain. The overflow was attended to and health warning signs were put in place along the drain. Even without sewer overflows many of the city's open drains have struggled to refresh themselves as they normally would this year due to the hot dry summer.
Transportation
- Cameron Road: Work to install kerb extensions and throat island to improve pedestrian facilities at the intersection with Hamilton Street is underway.
- Chadwick Road: There is a temporary chip seal surface on Chadwick Road between Fraser Street and Mitchell Street which will be replaced with a hot mix surface in April. Please take care when driving in the area.
- Dive Crescent: Work to construct a new footpath link between Dive Crescent and Mirrielees Road is underway. The work is expected to take 8 to 10 days to complete.
- Gravatt Road to Palm Beach Boulevard: Work to upgrade the pathway through the Papamoa Drainage Reserve has commenced. The work is expected to be completed in May. Detours are in place around the work area but walkers and cyclists are asked to take care.
- Otumoetai Road: Work to install ultrafast broadband as well as a 33KV power cable to the Matua Substation is continuing in the area around Otumoetai Road, Brookfield Terrace to Western Road. Please take care if you are driving or walking in these areas.
- Welcome Bay Road: Construction of a footpath is underway near the intersection with Waikite Road. Pedestrians are asked to take care.

What's the bet the council will cave in?

I don't think our council is too worried about the rights of the public to enjoy and have good access to public land. Let's see if they buckle on this one and allow the wealthy landowners to have their way. Reading the previous stories this path has been on the books since 2006, surely before the current neighbours moved in. Councillors, don't allow the effective privatisation of our reserves.
Erm sorry

I think it's a case of the "supposedly affluent" people of the Palm Beach area not liking to have any kind of link to the "rough area" of Papamoa. It's a case of them and us and the rich aren't liking it.

Interestingly I hear the locals in Pats lane (Plummers Point) are trying to flex their "affluent muscles" to stop the link between Omokoroa and the Huharua Park reserve too .. We need some transparency around why the minority can have such sway on these matters..
just to add

there is no current safe way from Bayfair to Maungatapu and beyond council and govt need to get real if they want people to use bikes to get around not for people to drive with bikes on board to ride to one place and back when they could do a circuit if there was one, again these $ should be spent on fixing Papamoa beach road (sunrise - Pacific view road)
Make sure your councillors don't cave in
