Facelift for Elizabeth Street

The section of Elizabeth Street between Grey Street and Durham Street will be given a facelift in the next few weeks.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says the existing footpath will be replaced with new block paving, new kerbs will be laid and street trees planted.

The section of Elizabeth Street between Grey and Durham Street will get an upgrade.

The existing pedestrian crossing points will also be upgraded to make it safer and easier for people to cross Elizabeth Street, says TCC.

The work is due to start next week and is expected to take about four weeks to complete. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

While the work is underway, council is asking motorists and pedestrians are asked to take extra care when driving or walking in the area.

Prettying up the farcade for teh punters all out of TCC coffers again to try and look like someone has done something, typical! Of course the birds in the trees will remain, keep an eye on all and leave the usual messages before, during and after.

So once again are we going to have another slippery surface to negotiate on a wet day, why can't Tauranga City Council get the message that the elderly and disabled are not safe on tile surfaces. Can imagine that there will be many spills on the paving outside the cinema on tuesdays when most senior citizens go to the movies. I do wonder if the council have once again accessed cheap tiles for this project. The paving that is there at the moment may not be pretty but it is safe to walk on in the wet.Come on Council think about your ratepayers for a change instead of spending up large on something that does not need doing.

so typical for people to love grey concrete, Tauranga is cold looking enough! The CBD in this area needs a face lift! to look like the rest. Slippy pavers? they are ok, i have never seen or heard of anyone falling over? otherwise it would be in the SUN!

Read the article properly

maggieanne can you please advise me just when did they pick up the whole cinema complex and move it up the road to where the works are actually taking place! Secondly there's no mention at all of the footpath being replaced with tiles. The article says "paving blocks" which are cobblestones. Good grief people take a prozac and get your facts right. It might just save yourselves looking like fools in the future. Smile everybody!

Money money money

More money to be spent on something not needed, the only ones it will benefit is the teenagers who spend time hanging out at BK and fighting in the streets . TCC stop wasting money.

amazing that

people seem to make comments on an article without actually reading it. Last time I looked the cinema was located in Elizabeth Street between Devonport Road and Grey Street. The area being upgraded [and there's even a photo of it] is between Grey Street & Durham Street. So maggieanne, probably would be a good idea if you limit your comments to something you know about instead of jumping to conclusions.

Unnecessary unwarranted and dangerous. Why then is the cash strapped TCC undertaking this very expensive inane exercise- I'll tell you why because it is election year and some TCC bozos are trying to earn some brownie points from the gullible punters. This is happening in other areas of Tauranga too. Vote for this bozo TCC Council bunch again at your financial peril.

Easy mate, they get to spend heaps a money for no apparent reason, in a few years it will all need replacing so more money spent. Lots of officials then have lots to do.

plain lovers, there have been several people injured by slipping on these pavers plus others tripping on the blocks, not all of us wear heels or footwear that may get caught in them. Have also heard of people pushing wheelchairs who have almost slipped on wet days.

It does not matter what they do, say or spend the results will be a splattering from the residents abvoe in the trees, they shall leave their "mark".

OK so I got the wrong bit of Elizabeth Street, but it in no way reduces my concerns about the use of paving blocks, or cobbles, they are equally dangerous and an utter waste of money. Agree with others that the Council just love spending money that they don't have especially in election year, like others lets vote the majority off this time and do the city a favour.

Other options

I would rather the TCC spend the money on finding a better solution to pouring sewage in to our once beautiful ocean then maybe we would be rid of the pollutants that are stopping us enjoy our seafood.

They wont clean that up, not "pretty" enough to be seen by the superficial so as to score the vote, need to have "pretty" things really handy and have to drive by daily to get the message in. Anyway RBOP say the habour pollution is from farm runoff, but RBOP have wandered off into the hills looking for that elusive farm somewhere that is the cause but I would suspect that they will be a long time looking for what does not exist.

How about Stuart do what he said last election about cleaning up the Carlton reserve water way, after all he did pose with a kid in front of it and waffle on about polution then once elected quick as a flash forgot the whole thing.
