Boardwalks and footpaths will be the hot topic of today's Tauranga City Council meeting which will hear objections to the cycle track along Papamoa, and potentially make a final decision on the controversial Pilot Bay boardwalk.
The Projects and Monitoring meeting will open with a 10 minute address from Mount Maunganui Progressive Association's David Burnett on the Pilot Bay boardwalk, before councillors make a decision on whether to go ahead with construction.
The planned Pilot Bay boardwalk will get another airing at Tauranga City Council's Projects and Monitoring Committee meeting today.
The planned $500,000 boardwalk project began in 2011 following concerns over the degradation along the waterfront, and went out for public consultation last year.
More than 100 submissions were received on the project and a plan was put together in line with submissions with construction set to start this month.
Last month a public meeting and protest was held at Pilot Bay after the plan gained criticism from residents.
Today councillors will make a decision on whether or not to begin construction on the boardwalk.
Council will also discuss the upgrade to the Papamoa cycleway from Gravatt Road to Hartford Avenue following concerns from Royal Palm Beach Estate residents.
The cycleway, which is one of 10 links running 32km in total from Papamoa to Bethlehem, was been in the legislatively consulted upon and discussed city plan since 2006.
The Papamoa Progressive Association was advised in November 2011 that the section from Hartford Avenue to Gravatt Road is the next to be gravelled. Tenders were called in November 2012.
Tauranga City Council says the improving the existing pathway to allow all weather use. The existing grass track becomes wet and unusable during winter months.
Locals are complaining the 3metre wide path is going to distract from their neighbourhood's existing quiet ambience.
They say it will provide vehicle access for vandals and thieves, leading to more thefts and of larger possessions.
There are also concerns it will obtrude from surrounding properties outlook on the water.

We mustn't upset Royal residents

I'm predicting the councillors will cave in to the demands of some Royal Palm Beach residents and their mock mansions and stop the cycle and walkway. But I'll be happily surprised if they have the sense to go ahead with it. Reserves don't belong to the people living next door. The few cycle and walkways around Tauranga are great. Get on with it.

Why are these nice to haves, not put on hold until current debt levels are at manageable levels?

I hope this is approved. It is the only sensible option to stop further erosion of the present grassy area.
walkways

Only problem with walkways is they get taken over by cyclists who seem to think they are racetracks, try the Waikareao walkway if you dont beleave me.Another problem is security till the Waikareao was we had no problem but as soon as it was opened the ploblems started and we were broken into 3 times, that only stoped whe we had an alarm fitted.Funny thing is that when the Waikareo walkway was opened cyclisys were not allowed on it also dogs had to be on leads, well the signposts were ripped out time and again till the council gave up. now dogs run all over the place chasing the wild life and cyclists rule the roost.I must also say that most dog owners seem to use doggie do bags,

PILOT BAY WALKWAY AND EXTENDING AROUND THE MOUNT TOO. I DRIVE TOURISTS FROM THE TOUR SHIPS WHICH WILL BE INCREASED BY ANOTHER 30 NEXT YEAR.(ABOUT 130 SHIPS P.A.).THEY HAVE OFTEN COMMENTED ON THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WALK AROUND THE MOUNTAIN. THE COUNCIL MUST GIVE PRIORITY TO HAVING THE WALKWAYS UPGRADED FOR ONE OF OUR CITY'S GREAT SOURCE OF INCOME, TOURISTS.REALLY IMPRESS THEM, THEY SPREAD THE WORD, AND INCLUDE A DONATION BOX. MIKE DEAN
