The debate over how many pedestrian crossings are to be added to The Mall in Pilot Bay will be held at Monday's Tauranga City Council meeting.
The proposed crossings have been incorporated into the recently approved boardwalk design, and are already provoking comment from councillors over their number.
Tauranga City Council will decide how many pedestrian crossings will be added to The Mall in Pilot Bay.
Speed limits in Pilot Bay were lowered from 50 km/h to 30km/h in August 2011. Installing five pedestrian crossings between Salisbury and Adams avenues is seen as the second stage of work intended to make The Mall safer for pedestrians.
In the three years to 2013, there have been three pedestrians injured in Pilot Bay, two of them seriously. All were children – two were aged eight and one was aged three years old. Two of them were struck by vehicles when they stepped out from behind parked cars.
Marine Parade, which also has a 30km/h speed limit along the Main Beach and similar recorded traffic volumes, has had no pedestrian accidents during the same period. Along the 1150m of Marine Parade between Adams Avenue and Banks Avenue there are 10 formal pedestrian crossings.
In Pilot Bay, the intention is to add five crossings over 930m between Salisbury Avenue and Adams Avenue.
Staff say it will result in the loss of 28 car parks, and the project is expected to cost between $15-20,000 per crossing for kerb build-outs, re-aligned foot paths signage and road marking.

cant understand the argument. why not have a solid track to enhance the place - a real asset to the mount!!
Stepping out?

That is not exactly the fault of the moving cars on the street, a little more care by partents and kids alike is the only answer here. Stepping out in front of a car child or adult is always going to leave the human body in peril. Anyway five crossings is completely nuts ... what an overkill and some.

why not close the road off to traffic FULL STOP. geeeeeeees why do you need all those pedestrian crossings. Not as it its a main street or something...... waste of money and also taking away car parks. talk about driving people away from the area. I am sure TCC is trying to see how fast they can spend money they NOT got.
No crossings

Crossing will never be in the right place so you are always more vigilant when crossing away from a crossing.have none and be done with it.
Crossings

It's too bad we Kiwis have the habit of "jay-walking", where we just cross where we want to, instead of going to a designated crossing. Do the commentators so far note that the article states there are 10 crossings along Marine Parade for 1150 metres, and the plan is for 5 crossings for 930 metres along the Mall? A lot fewer, relatively speaking. I understand they will pretty much line up with the streets feeding in to the Mall, thereby guiding pedestrians coming from, or going to, those streets onto the safety of the crossing. Personally, I don't mind TCC spending $75 - 100,000 on crossings if they are going to prevent serious injuries or deaths, though I can guarantee people still won't always use them. Overseas it's an offense to jay walk.

Cr David Stewart quoted in another article saying

Cr Stewart said everyone he had spoken to felt five crossings were too much of an intrusion compared with what was there now. "But I will be guided by professional advice." Well I will be buggered....Does he NOT LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE?.....AND make a decision around who he is representing
