Tauranga Chamber of Commerce today appealed to Tauranga City Council to adopt a new vision statement to provide a new sense of purpose and direction.
CEO Max Mason told council at today's Annual Plan hearings Tauranga needs to adopt a new culture and aspire to be ‘New Zealand's best city'.
Tauranga Chamber of Commerce CEO Max Mason says the city needs a new vision.
He compared Auckland's five word vision statement of ‘The world's most liveable city,' with Tauranga's 67 words, which ‘was designed by a committee and is bland and boring'.
He said Tauranga had been through a long period of hard infrastructure development, and now that was largely in place the city needed to change into a new paradigm of soft infrastructure development, and an inspiring city vision would help achieve it.
'First and foremost we need to grow our local economy to create good jobs and grow our quality of life.
'Unfortunately we have a thin economy, over dependent on a few big industries, with low wages, that is vulnerable to external economic events.
Max says the city needs to attract businesses and people who can create wealth.
'However they don't just come here for business opportunities, they are equally attracted by good educational provision, arts and cultural institutions, international quality events and sporting facilities, and an attractive urban environment with public art and great architecture.
'Add to that a strong sense of community vision and identity and it's a winning combination,” says Max.
He said if Tauranga had an aspirational city vision such as ‘New Zealand's best city,' council staff and elected members would make better decisions looking through that lens.
'Take a planner who is processing a pile of resource consents. If they had a mindset of us being the best city by having full employment, and one resource consent is likely to create more jobs than the others then they should be encouraged to deal with that one first.”
'If you apply this attitude throughout the council organisation there will be a culture change which will have far reaching results throughout our community,” he said.
Max referred to the book ‘What got you here, won't get you there,' and said the city's past focus on infrastructure development and short term cost control now needed to evolve into a longer term investment perspective in economic and community development.
'This is less about money and more about leadership,” he said,
'And with a new CEO in Garry Poole, and new senior managers, the timing was perfect for culture change.”

The best cultural change I could envisage would be to give the flick to Council funded organisations like the Chamber of Commerce and Priority One. Max has the same word pool in everything he features in - infrastructure, vision, inspiring, new one this time - paradigm. Do any of us really care what the Chamber thinks? I would be more impressed to see them doing something productive and being sel sufficient. If or when you manage to do this, you may earn a bit more respect.
Tauranga Vision

Let's fact it. Tauranga city is a nice place but it has no heart and never has had. I've lived here all my life, thankfully on the other side of the harbour. Tauranga city is boring, has a depressive feel and is as dull at ditchwater. The city centre should be at Mount Maunganui where it is vibrant, alive, beautiful and the coastal lifestyle is embraced by most of the residents. Being labelled as Tauranga is holding back this beautiful part of the coast. Tauranga should be a suburb of Mount Maunganui/Papamoa - not the other way around.

I think you are running out of ideas Max.Fix the obvious problems first. Tauranga needs a supportive council and councilors who understand business and who can think out of the square. It has to stop listening to organisations such as Priority One,Smartgrowth,Yourself and it's CCOs and start listening to the people who are trying to make a living in the city from their own money.People who earn their rewards unlike the wage earners I have mentioned above who don't understand risks and financial losses and gains. Support the businesses and watch the city grow and become a place risk takers want live in.

Of wealth destruction and trampling over property rights. I completely agree with marigold -- Mt Maunganui is where its at. Tauranga city is drab and grey with a few nice scattered pockets.

‘New Zealand's best city,' I think New Plymouth beat you to it .. New Plymouth has been judged the best place to live in New Zealand (North & South Magazine) and the best small city in the world (Liveable Communities Awards).. but Max might mean best big city .. What really got New Plymouth going was a very inspirational positive Mayor Peter Tennent who inspired the community and EM with his vision.. that's the starting point ..
spend more money !

It sounds like max wants to spend more of other peoples money. what makes him think he can do better than actual business people ? A bit of other peoples wealth redistribution onto his favorite projects maybe ?. Maybe he could first make his organization self sufficient without council and government funding ?

Another §100k of Ratepayers money to his favourite consultants to come up with a 'Vision Statement'. Make it a competition for the public to come up with an idea....

Nothing else changes, money spent and nothing to show for it. Must be nice to be a TCC paid official and no need of producing anything useful day in and day out.

Change the council

How much more rate payers money is the council going to spend on these fanicfull aims and objectives that result in more criticism and more money spent trying to find better solutions. Money better spend elsewhere I say. I cant wait for the next round of elections, hopefully by then a decent applicant will rise above all these useless councillors we currently have. Hopefully a more realistic one.

If you need a new vision, you need new ideas. To get new ideas you. need new people. With a new CEO and senior managers we are half way there, in August we get the chance to get new councilors. As Max says this is about leadership.
I too have vision
