Parking works on Monmouth St

Work starts today on revamping the parking along Monmouth Street and repairing damaged berms.

It is expected to take up to a month to undertake the works that including building formal parking bays, repairing berms and installing street lights.

Once these changes are completed berm parking will no longer be allowed on Monmouth Street. However, there will be more formal parking spaces available and parking will remain free.

Tauranga City Council says the purpose of the project is to improve safety and the look and feel of the street.

While the work is being done, Monmouth Street will be closed from time-to-time to everyone except residents. People who regularly park on the berms in Monmouth Street will need to find an alternative place to park while the work is being done.

Council has also received consent to turn the northern part of the old Cliff Road Courts into a parking area. This will be ready in a few weeks and will have 64 new, all-day car parking spaces in it.

Parking in the new car park will be $2.50 per day.

This from Tauranga City Council's weekly update for week starting May 20.

The public submission period for the Draft Coastal Reserves Management Plan runs from Monday 20 May until Friday 19 July.
  • This year's planting in Gordon Carmichael Reserve has begun. Mountain flax and multi-stemmed Pohutukawas will be planted along the western bank in the hope of stabilising the land. A new walking track has been completed which connects the upper section of the St Michaels sub-division with the western track.

City Waters

  • A minor sewer overflow affected the Maleme Street open drain on Tuesday 14 May. The overflow was caused by a blockage at a food processing plant in Maleme Street. Most of the discharge was water, so the impact on the waterway was very low, although water quality samples have been taken.

At last. Its good to see some remedial maintenance work being being done. I encourage council to do this type of meaningful and valuable work well before taking on new and expensive projects such as the pilot bay walkway, or even thinking about a Public Art policy which like all policies will encourage even further expenditure not only preparing the initial policy but managing it thoughout its life. These things and in particular arts related policies and plans seem to have an insatable apatite for money as "expert" panels are formed and "experts" are called on the analyse proposals and the like. Be very afraid.
