An offer to remove one of the barking dogs from a house in Windsor Road is being considered by Tauranga City Council hearings committee.
Council animal control staff are seeking the removal of three dogs owned by two people living at the address, in what they say is an unusual move.
Residents of a Windsor Road property have offered to give up one of three dogs that live at the house.
The call is being made after reports of persistent loud barking, an allegation challenged by the alleged offending dogs' owners Kelvin Mathie and Jeffrey Keast.
Kelvin owns Sativa, a Labrador whippet cross and Jess, a Border collie and Jeff owns Whistle, a fox terrier boxer cross.
Both men say the dogs don't bark when either of them are at home and several of the complaints about dogs barking were made at times when they were at home.
'We are feeling a bit bullied,” says Jeff.
He went on to say that he's been at home himself with the dogs quiet and listened to other dogs barking along the street.
Kelvin offered to remove Jess, a pure bred spayed border collie who he took in after the dog's former owner threatened to put her down if he didn't.
'I took Jess in, got her spayed and registered. Unfortunately my property is not big enough for three dogs.”
He asked for a month to find a new home for her, something he says will be easy enough as she will make an ideal family dog.
Animal control officers say there have been complaints of dogs barking in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Kelvin says the two previous instances were dogs belonging to former flatmates who have since left. The current barking began after he acquired young Jess.
'So I believe if I remove her things will go back to normal.”
Committee chairman Wayne Moultrie talked over the time required with animal control manager Brent Lincoln, who suggested it could take a little while for the other two dogs to settle, if the removal notice was applied just to Jess.
The committee, including councillors Larry Baldock and Bill Grainger, has reserved their decision.

Dog neglect

Sigh! Barking dogs are such a pain, but I am sorry for the poor muts. They crave and need company so when the 'pack leader' is away for 10 hours a day they stress out, whether they bark or not. Owners need to appreciate this, and should not have a dog unless they can stay with it. Leaving a dog on its own is neglect and should be seen as such.

I feel for the owners of those dogs. I ask these questions. are the dogs bored do they get enough exercise and mental stimulus? do they have proper shelter and are warm and dry? are they fed the correct diet? and how often. Are they being intiminated by roaming cats, dogs, humans banging on fence etc to rark them up? solutions? Can purchase bark collars and these have an electrode on them that sends out a mild shock when the dog barks it is the vibration of the vocal cords that sets off same. see on trade me and type in "Bark collars". I have dogs of my own and I practice above and I also adhere to the training methods of caesa Milan and it works. On one side of me I have awful neigbours that complain a lot of the time and my local dog control guy knows what they are like and has suggeste they contact me personally if any trouble. I have no trouble with anyone else. My dogs do not roam I agree there are to many roaming dogs about and I agree with one of your readers maybe the council should go to the property and do their own monitoring instead of sitting around a table decideng the next move.

Dogs bark if they are bored. Dogs are like children, they need attention and loving. Not left at home all day to entertain themselves. If a dog has to be home all day. a warm kennel with a run is the answer.

You are obviously ignorant of dog welfare. The points made by mr rate payer echo those of the dog control officers and experienced and responsible dog owners. Careful you don't tread in the doggie do's...
