Matakana Island plan adopted

The Matakana Island Plan has been adopted by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

The plan is an integrated approach to guide land use and development on the Island, says a statement released by the council.

'It is a stand-alone document highlighting the complex cultural, social, economic and natural environment of the Island.

Matakana Island.

'The Plan identifies Council's visions and principles regarding development and the actions required to achieve these visions. Although the Plan does not have legal power in its own right, it will be given effect through to changes to Council's District Plan.”

The statement goes on to say the residents of Matakana Island, both Māori and non-Māori, are community minded and this contributes to the special way of life, relaxed lifestyle and high level of self-sufficiency.

'Even though most of the Island has been in production forestry for almost 100 years, the Island has a unique and sensitive natural environment and biodiversity.

'Matakana Island has one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in the Western Bay District.”

Opportunities for development exist on the Island but these need to meet at least the following criteria:

*Supports the unique way of life that is valued by the community.

*Fosters social and cultural harmony.

*Protects and where possible enhances the natural environment and biodiversity values of the Island.

*Create employment opportunities for the Island community.

The District Plan change process (Plan Change 45) has started.

This aims to give statutory effect to the principles of the Matakana Island Plan.

According to the timeline set by the Environment Court, the changes have to be notified before August 8.
