Sunken digger in Memorial Park

A digger involved in the construction of a new $8.2m pump station and pipeline remains on its side in Memorial Park after it toppled over this week.

Tauranga City Council project manager Richard Myers says the rig was employed to carry out deep soil mixing, a technique used to strengthen the ground ready for new infrastructure – in this case the Memorial Park Pump Station Inc Judea Link project.

The digger remains idle in Memorial Park after toppling over on Monday.

The $8.2m project is a sewer pipeline that will create a link in the city's wastewater network between Judea and Memorial Park.

Richard says the cause of the incident is still under investigation and team are currently planning the retrieval of the rig so that work can recommence.

TCC communications advisor Marcel Currin says the digger fell over on Monday evening while being used for a 'standard task” it has been doing since April.

'One of the reasons it is still there is because it is a pretty big rig and it had sunk a bit overnight.”

Marcel says the operator was in the machine when a column slipped and he could not control it. SunLive understands no serious injuries occurred.

Why a communications adviser?

To make a statement about a mishap that obviously happens from time to time why does the Council use a communications adviser? Communications advice makes me think of spin.

Spin

I agree with Councillorwatch, the use of a spin doctor on this incident warrents investigation more than the digger, good heavens this is not an unusal occurance, it happens more often than you might imagine. It does concern me, as it should all other ratepayers, why are we using communication advisers, is there something sensitive hear they don't want you to find out about?

The Digger

Obvious the digger was on shaky ground when parked up, but that only illustrates the whole situation of the project and its proponents SmartGrowth, the failures of a few to heed their own failures and plough onward and relentlessly. The digger tipping over does hint at what is to come for ratepayers on this project and they all well know it but refuse to act responsibly.
