Hundreds of road signs to go

Hundreds of road signs around Tauranga will be removed in the coming months as Tauranga City Council looks to help reduce driver confusion and roading clutter.

Signs including 112 roundabout signs on single lane entries, give way and advanced warning signs will be removed in residential areas and subdivisions deemed low in risk and traffic volumes.

Tauranga City Council city transportation manager Martin Parkes with two signs to be removed at the 10th Avenue and St John Street roundabout.

The move is in response to a review of the city's traffic signage released this week.

Tauranga City Council city transportation manager Martin Parkes says the sign removal will not only reduce visual clutter at intersections, but also reduce further maintenance costs.

Last year council spent $300,000 on traffic signs citywide including replacing damaged, old and stolen signs, and installing new signs.

The signs to be removed represent about 3 per cent of the total number of traffic signs in the city's road network, which excludes state highways.

There are currently about 12,600 traffic signs around Tauranga City. Signs in good condition will be stored and recycled.

'We have reviewed all these and feel there's an opportunity to rationalise the number of signs out there. We don't think that will compromise safety at all,” says Martin.

'It also reduces visual clutter, which can be confusing for some drivers. The more signs we put up the more confusing it can be for some drivers as they approach these intersections.

'It's best to keep signs at a minimum, drivers can only process so much as they approach intersections.”

He says the sign removal not only slashes maintenance budgets but also benefits the ratepayer in the future.

Following the success of the review other signage matters in the city will now be reviewed.

Well, well, well. So who takes responsibility for initiating all of these signs to go up in the first place. Was it the same man in the photo? Unbelievable.
