Rival tsunami siren advocates will be talking on the merits of their systems in a public meeting at Papamoa next month.
In a meeting organised by the Papamoa Progressive Association, siren installers Meerkat Alert Systems Ltd and Tactical Tooling Ltd will each have half an hour to put their case to the public on July 8.
Air raid sirens being tested last year.
It's a way of keeping the tsunami sirens issue alive, says PPA acting chairman Steve Morris.
'It's just about use encouraging council to fulfil their commitments,” says Steve.
'They have promised, and we just want them to deliver.”
Papamoa residents were promised tsunami sirens in 2005, since then three systems have been proposed and scrapped.
'We are not interested in a gold plated or expensive foreign system, we want something simple, cost effective that works.”
'We are trying to get council to act on the multiple commitments that have been made multiple times over eight years now. That's why we are doing it. We just want them to act on their word. As a ratepayers' association that is what we are there for.”
Representatives from Meerkat and Tactical Tooling will each have 30 minutes. Steve understands the Meerkat people are going to have a powerpoint presentation. He does not know what Tactical Tooling will present.
Meerkat was the city council's preferred tenderer before the plug was pulled on the sirens for the third time.
Tactical Tooling is the supplier of the air raid sirens that were used in a live demonstration last October.
'When you look at how the council tender process was conducted, three elected members three staff really made the decisions,” says Steve. 'This is about opening it up and getting it transparent so the community can make its own mind up.”
City councillors are invited.
The meeting is on Monday July 8, at 7:30pm at the Papamoa Library, 15 Gravatt Rd.

Let's decide Council tenders by vote

The community can decide all Council tenders and for that matter government tenders as well. Referendums could be held on everything and we wouldn't need councillors.
Face off?

Sounds like back to talking again? But really the only genuine no BS way is to get the real thing and fire it up then we all know what the story is. Tactila have done that Meerkat have not.
Am I the only one?

that thinks these sirens are a big fat waste of time and money - for something that MIGHT, just MIGHT happen at some point in the next few hundred years !!?? Surely this money can be put to better use for things that are killing people TODAY !!

You may be the only one, that I do not know, but I do know if I was at the Beach and heard the sirens I would know that need to get out in hurry. Hopefully the only time they sound is for practice, not for real. Who takes the wrap if it really happens, I presume not you but someone in Council. When at Whitianga a while ago they mentioned the use of sirens when suspect Tsunami was around and because of tidal surges up there no one had problems when using boats because of that.Wisdom of using etc is wise.
A siren

Will only help those with the easiest way out. Pap and the Mt need more str8 roads inland. Cant blame the Council for a tsunami, but hey, the more u want the more Rates will increase, and by the time the wave comes, the Siren will probably malfunction..... if the ocean suddenly retreats, or u get a large earthquake, RUN.
STOP PREVARICATING IT IS A NO BRAINER

No one other than the Council pointy heads the Mayor and selected fawning Councillors want a bar of the Meerkat electronic $multi million$ sirens with megabucks of annual maintainance involved so cut the cackle and get the effective 10 Tactool air raid sirens installed strategically for $200k and be done with it.Oh and they are primarily warning systems not lifesavers !!
Sirens

May as well have something that makes a lot of noise, waste of time otherwise. No need of something electronic as that will jsut corrode and cost a fortune to fix, like that would be typical of TCC though.

This has been going on for 8 years and still no decision, what a total waste of our money. Lets get rid of these clowns and elect a council that will govern instead of dithering about.
