Parking offenders in Tauranga city have been stung $1.4million in the last year through fines issued by wardens.
According to figures, Tauranga City Council has issued a total of $1,414,542 in parking fines in the last financial year ending June 30, 2013.
Parking fines issued in the last financial year total $1.4million.
This is up more than $70,000 on the previous year ending 30 June 2012, where council collected $1,343,305 in parking fines, but down from the $1,422,871 collected for the financial year ending June 30, 2011.
City parking wardens issued 18,549 infringement notices in the city centre in the 2012/13 financial year; 2925 in the downtown area at the Mount and 1041 in Greerton Village. A further 7691 were issued across the rest of the city.
City council transportation manager Martin Parkes says the revenue from fines is used to cover the cost of running the parking scheme. Any surplus is used to pay off the debt on the parking buildings.
When asked if the increase means the city centre is experiencing an increase in shoppers and is on the re-bound, Martin says the small amount of difference makes it too difficult to tell.
'These things tend to end up and down over time,” says Martin.
'It's really difficult to give a comment on it because it's such a low change.
'That figure when we look over a period of time is fairly stable. If we saw a $300,000 difference then we might look a little bit more closely for a reason why. But for us that's a pretty stable number going forward.”

And you're still wondering why the CBD is dying.
Targets

It's because the parking wardens are now working on a target based system which forces them to be far more vigilant. There has been more than enough income from parking to pay for the buildings and this is a very flimsy reason to continually penalise the customers of the CBD in particular.

No fats here, Accountable is right the collections over the years have more than paid for the buildings so where has the $$$ gone to then instead?

Money Grabbing Council

Nows your chance in the upcoming council elections to have a change and get some new councilors who are not out to grab as much revenue from ratepayers as this current one does, they have killed off the parking in Tauranga, just last week increased minimum parking charges up to 50cents, and even have jobs worth wardens giving out tickets at the community market on a saturday well out of the city center where they have buggered up the parking as well. Tauranga Council you are really sad people! Yes we want you to pay rates they say, but we want to destroy business in the CBD at the same time, stop visitors parking, and kill off all the restaurants on the Strand because its almost impossible to park in the evening, let alone during the daytime. Look what this great council has done for the Strand, Made it about the most dull, unattractive place in the Bay of Plenty and wow put some swings in to attract the kids, would you want your kids playing by the open water with strong currents. Is this the best we can do for the best city in the country, this council needs stuffing!!!

Well done councillors, reduce the amount of car parks and increase parking fines. Coupled with a ridiculous transit centre in the middle of town is a great way to kill the inner city.
