Book charges campaign launches

Tauranga's Vanessa Byrnes is leading a campaign to get every Bay of Plenty resident to put forward a submission on the Tauranga City Council's controversial proposal to introduce charges on some library books.

Vanessa Byrnes is taking her campaign to the streets over the next four weeks in protest over a proposal to charge for some library book borrowing.

Residents will get four weeks from Monday to make a submission on the issue.
Vanessa is leading the ‘Save our Library Campaign' and will spend the next four weeks encouraging everyone in the region to put forward a submission.
TCC is proposing to charge 50 cents for all adult library books.
'It's a ridiculous proposal and it's shameful the council has got to this point,” says Vanessa.
'This council is so indebted they are attacking anything they can to scramble back up the cliff.”
She and other members of the campaign will be out on the streets of Tauranga – at schools, service groups, the jazz festival and other events with 10,000 copies of submissions.
People can also access submissions online at the TCC website: www.tauranga.govt.nz

It is outrageous that council ego thinks that the community are in favor of this stupid, stupid idea. Get off the grass and do something constructive, how about turning up for meetings and putting 100% effort into them and not just taking the money and looking after your own buisiness interests. This plan will hit students wanting to source information, adults and also older generation adults, if fact across the spectrum. The library for many is a social hub and to take a book home to read a right. Whoever tcame up with this proposal needs to resign (and the seconder), they are totally out of touch with good social community practice

How can I afford small pleasures if pay for books

How dare Silent call me a bludger. If I borrow 20 books at 50 cents, thats $10 which is ridiculous and could affect my ability to go to the movies or enjoy a treat meal next door. Vanessa is right and is going to win this. Libraries should only be paid for by rates. Say no to users paying anything.
