Alcohol committee needed

Eastern Bay of Plenty councils are seeking people passionate about the responsible sale and supply of alcohol to form a shared District Licencing Committee.

The three councils, Kawerau, Whakatane and Kawerau, are joining forces to form the committee and are seeking applications for members and a commissioner.

People are being asked to put their name forward for a proposed alcohol committee.

The DLC will have responsibility for local-level decisions under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, including liquor licence applications, new and renewal of premises licences, manager's certificates, special licences and temporary authorities.

These are regulatory decision making roles so applicants need to have relationship skills, a strong understanding of governance issues, and independent and strategic thinking skills.

Members will also need to be independent of the alcohol industry with no current involvement or connections. The commissioner will also need chairperson, legal or hearing experience.

The committee comes into force in December this year and training will be provided for all new members.

Expressions of interest close on July, 26 2013.

Position descriptions and information about how to apply for these positions can be found on each of the council websites: www.whakatane.govt.nz, www.kaweraudc.govt.nz, and www.odc.govt.nz.
