Time limits prime ticket earner

Exceeding time limits remains Tauranga City Council's biggest earner when it comes to parking fines, a breakdown of the figures reveals.

Figures from council supplied to SunLive shows during the 2012-2013 financial year a total of 17,255 parking tickets were issued against 10,072.

A total of 17,255 parking tickets were issued in the last financial year.

This included 8121 for vehicles parked with no registration, and 1951 for no current Warrant of Fitness.

There were 2879 tickets issued for illegal parking - such as parking on broken yellow lines, or footpaths.

The bulk of the city's $1,414,542 income came from parking fines. The income from traffic offences counts for a smaller percentage, with the government taking the major proportion.

The figure compares with $1,343,305 collected in parking fines for the financial year that ended on 30 June 2012, and with $1,422,871 collected for the financial year that ended on 30 June 2011.

Most of the parking tickets and infringement notices were issued in CBD (18,549). There were 2925 in the Downtown Mount and 1041 in Greerton Village. A further 7691 were issued across the rest of the city.

Now more expensive to park in Tauranga than Auckland...

Posted on 22-07-2013 14:47 | By jed

I parked next to the viaduct for an hour the other day -- cost $2. The week before, parked in Tauranga for an hour to visit a govt. department....cost $3. This is just nuts.

Just a question???

can someone please help me with trying to understand, if the council employs say 50 people to collect 1.5 million, at say 30k per annum. per employee(just wages, no administration costs)thats 1.5 million alone, so how profitable is actually giving out parking tickets??, or having automatic payment systems??, so have I made a mistake reading the story, or is the council devoid of an abacus,or my rough staffing figures are out.

yeah mate you have figured it, except that the average TCC salary is $65,000 odd, that makes the costs about $3.25m but in TCC language that means that they "made a surplus" of $1.4m not a loss of $2.0+m and counting.

Tauranga City Council = Biggest Joke in TGA financial history

Posted on 23-07-2013 06:33 | By dakota

no one wants to shop in TGA anymore...bayfair by far worth the effort...no wants the thought of walking back to their car with a ticket on display...anywhere but the city, shop stress free makes happy people.

I won't shop on the CBD for this very reason. Tauranga city central is so user unfriendly including the parking fines why would I. Had one or two visiting friends that have been ticketed for being a couple of minutes late getting back to their cars. They won't come back they think the place sucks. Good one Council!!

Taupo

I agree. You can't get retail space in Taupo. There are no empty shops because people love shopping there with free parking and a consequent welcoming atmosphere.
