Four crossings for Pilot Bay

Pilot Bay is set to have four pedestrian crossings with the fourth to be sited on The Mall next to the boat ramp carpark entrance.

Councillors yesterday approved the fourth pedestrian crossing after postponing from April to consider the best location in the busy corner where foot traffic from the boardwalk will combine with Mauao base walkers and pedestrians along Adams Avenue.

Four crossings will be installed on Pilot Bay.

TCC transportation manager Martin Parkes was quizzed by councillors about whether the crossing will interfere with vehicle access onto private property, how far the concrete kerb will intrude on traffic lanes, how many car parks will be lost, and why it couldn't be put on the corner with Adams Avenue.

'We did look at the whole area,” says Martin.

'This one site is simply the best, it's the site where we lose the fewest car parks, plus it doesn't affect driveways so much as other sites.”

Other crossings are to be on the Leinster Avenue side of Commons Avenue, between Grace and Pacific Avenues, and at Prince Avenue.

NZ Transport Agency will pay for half of the cost of the crossings, as they are being introduced due to road safety issues during summer, says Martin.

When compared with Marine Parade, which has similar traffic levels and the same speed limit of 30km/h at the western end, The Mall has more traffic accidents.

In the last three years three children have been injured in traffic accidents in Pilot Bay, two of them seriously.

On Marine Parade there are 11 pedestrian crossings between Adams Avenue and Banks Avenue, and there have been no accidents in the last three years.

There may be more if the bike riders, runners, skateboarders etc use the board walk and hit young children trying to enjoy the calm waters of Pilot Bay. Road crossing is only as good as the parents teach. Saw yesterday afternoon what looked like two youngsters looking to cross Takitumu Drive with bikes near Elizabeth Street, surely some parent shave done this with them or told them too. Crossings are only as good as the users. How many people just walk out with out looking and expect everything to stop suddenly.

why dont they just close the road completely because with the amount of pedestrians you expect to be crossing the road the traffic will hault anyway..............

No need any

so traffic movement will be zero, during the Summer months, as uncontrolled pedestrian crossings in Geerton will attest too, good luck to the ratepayers in the area of pilot bay getting home feeling relaxed, during those lazy hazy days.

why dont they just shut the road completly. pedestrians are going to abuse this and just wander across the road any way.

And this sort of lunatic decision only confirms. Why not make the Mall into a closed off no vehicle pedestrian crossing /pedestrian mall and see how public react.Speed limit is currently 30kph which is ridiculous as is 4 ped xings.

So glad, as people seem to drive silly down this road. There is another street along side this one, why cant people use this other one if these new crossing are to be a pain...its not all cars, cars, cars some of us do walk...so lets make it safe!

Good Grief

What on earth are you thinking Mr Parkes, wouldn't it make sense to reduce the road to one way one lane on the side furthest away from the boardwalk and turn the closed lane into diagonal parking for the boardwalk and pilot bay users, this would reduce the traffic to one direction which will be safer, the resulting chaos of cars using the parking will reduce traffic flow and speed to such an extent pedestrians will control the traffic movement.

Madness revisited

Looks like lightening does strike twice in the same place, TCC just can not help themselves but mess with things that are not broken, 30km or say 2 Ped/Xgs would be more than enough any day. What a complete overkill.
