Two dogs that fatally attacked 11 sheep on a rural Pyes Pa farm this week are awaiting their fate in the pound.
At around midday on Monday the two border-collie cross dogs escaped from their compound and attacked the sheep on a neighbouring property on Pyes Pa Road.

The dogs killed six sheep and badly injured another five – which were later euthanised.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council animal services team leader, Andrew Hope, says the two registered and micro-chipped dogs are in the pound until council's investigation is concluded.
'It was very vicious on the sheep. The dogs are not aggressive to humans they are sheep aggressive.
'Unfortunately there were six sheep already dead and five badly injured that needed to be euthanised by animal services.”
He says two people witnessed the incident with one managing to pull the dogs away and secure them before animal services arrived.
The owner of the 11 sheep is also seeking reparation following the incident.
'Understandably there is quite a lot of value in stock,” says Andrew.
Council is expected to have a decision on whether charges will be laid by tomorrow.

dog owners should be held 100 percent accountble. and charged............ Its not the dogs fault. several years ago my parents had over 60 sheep destroyed by dogs. The owners were not charged because they said the dogs escaped and did the damage........ not them. The dogs were destroyed........ . Lots of these things happen when people from town move to the country and do not keep dogs under control............ Memories of those poor sheep are still in my mind...........

I agree with you @whatsinaname, owners need to be responsibe for their dogs. We have 3 large dogs and spent a fortune having a decent 6ft fence built because we are just not the type of people that let their dogs roam free. In this instance it seems the dog escaped but the owners should still hold some responsibility for what has happen, and unfortunately those dogs should be put down, if they have attacked once they will do it again.....however I really do feel sorry for the owners as these dogs are most likely much loved pets I couldn't imagine how it would feel to be in their position at the moment

yes it is sad that once these dogs have killed they may do it again. still lies down to the owner............ they hold FULL responsibility. . No questions asked....

What a horrific incident these sheep went through. I only hope the Police actually charge the owner/s of these dogs. When my calves were attacked by a dog, and when the owners friend was chasing the dog, he showed me his hideous bottom and threatened me in front of one of my children, yet the Police refused to do anything about it! What has to happen before the Police actually act???
