When Merivale resident Paul Griffiths confronted a menacing gang of Merivale taggers outside his property last week he called 111 – as the Tauranga City council and police campaign urged him to.
'Graffiti is a crime – dial 111,” states the posters.
Merivale.
But Paul called 111 three times during about an hour-and-a-half and no one turned up – leaving him facing off with half a dozen young men, with their faces masked and their hands wrapped in cloths.
Paul took his complaint directly to the Tauranga City Council this week, telling councillors how the taggers are now a constant problem and very few people are standing up to them.
'It was a very stressful situation and it's been going on for some time,” says Paul. 'I've been living in Merivale for 13 years now and this is the second time where I have had to call the police to a situation where there's a gang of youths ranging in the 14-19 sort of ages. It's the second time I've had to deal with it myself.
'The neighbours are too scared to come out, I don't know if the police are too scared or what, but they're not making the proper arrangements. The residents are not going to do anything about tagging because they won't come out of their houses.”
One other resident in his street who will challenge taggers is too old, says Paul. Getting the council to clean the tagging up afterwards is also frustrating, he says.
'You virtually have to get abusive on the phone to get anything done. It's the same with Housing New Zealand. They could put a lot of input into how to prevent tagging in the area but they don't seem to want to know.
'There's a few issues there I think need to be dealt to .”
When the 111 call didn't work, Paul rang the Tauranga Police station and was told the Senior Sergeant was on the phone. When he told the operator the situation was urgent, she hung up on him.
'You can't ring 111, then you can't ring the police station because you might be a bit abusive because of the tense situation, [so] what do you do.”
Paul likes living in Merivale, it's a very handy location and he hopes to be there for quite some time. He was assaulted two years ago and he's had friends move out because they have been assaulted by gangs of youths over tagging.
'I don't want to be driven out. I don't want to be threatened. I don't want windows smashed, cars kicked in, things like that – because we stand up and say something.”
Tauranga City councillor Bill Grainger invited Paul to a meeting he's having next week with community police, the city council's parks and reserves team, the headmaster of Merivale Primary School.
Paul also met with Greerton Police this week, who apologised to him and told him an examination of their logs could find no reason why his 111 calls weren't responded to, as there wasn't a lot of other crime happening at the same time.

good on you Paul for standing up to these kids. Get a neighbourhood watch going and when the police get lots of 111 calls from different people the call taker might actually pass it on
Nothing has changed

My sympathies are with Paul. About 10 years ago we had similar problems in Bellevue. One persistent tagger did our fence so many times. He also tampered with our gates and mail and set fire to a section of our fence. We called the police on numerous occasions and even told them where he lived. Nothing was done but we were told next time we caught him to hold onto him until the Police arrived. We did this but the Police still didn't come. They did come later after the boy went home and told his Mother who rang the Police. The Police came then OK and charged my husband with assault. The law is an ass.
Nothing New

This article does not surprise me in the least. The previous community Manager would have you believe there were no problems like this in Merivale. This only the tip of the iceberg just drive thru there at night and see the cheapest gas station in the area empty because people are too scared to stop there at night to get petrol. These gangs of youths just intimidate people all the time day or night. Its about time the police got off their backsides and actually patrolled the area. As for the council instead of wasting ratepayers money making stupid boardwalks and wondering where to put a museum actuall tackle the problems in the merivale area.
Police response

This is what happens when you have an underfunded and under resourced police force. They seem to have time to go to meetings, though, and probably write up more rules and regulations which they can't then enforce
Harden up

Good one Paul, I hope you can get a few neighbours to harden up seeing as the police are being reluctant

Good luck Paul stopping the taggers...Im not surprised the Police didnt turn up, no ticket to write out eh? If these mongrels assaulted you, the chances of them being charged are little to none...I was assaulted by a feral individual, suffered ongoing injuries, but the Police said since I pushed my attacker away I assaulted her as well, so I was going to be charged with assault...for defending myself!!! And society wonders why we have such a problem with crime...its not nipped in the bud, nothing happens to the perps when the commit crimes, so they continue to do so, and its the general public who suffer! Isn't prevention better than cure???
costing money they say

council need to be reminded about news they broadcasted on how taggers were costing rate payers thousands for damage repairs due to tagging if they are serious they and police themselves need to be on the same page and react fast a meeting is kind of after the bulls bolted dont you think?
@ Rosbo -Police availability

I reckon you hit the nail on the head Rosbo. It depends on what the police are doing when you call. They would be wanting to respond to every call, but will often be swamped, basically due to being under-resourced by government who have given billions - yes billions, away to a grievance industry by pinching budgets off a hard working public service. The price the police pay for that, is public criticism for not turning up.

I would like to see the amount of rate payers money being wasted removing tagging, taggers are scum with no respect or pride.I have to travel to Bethlehem each day and the tagging on the new motorway is appalling. It would be cheaper to mount cameras and catch them than keep painting over the problem. There is NO ART in Tagging it is plain vandalism.
