Work on four new pedestrian crossings on The Mall will begin on Monday.
Tauranga City Council says there will be varying amounts of disruption and diversions during the next couple of months as stormwater upgrade work cross The Mall at a number of intersection.
The Mall is set to have four new pedestrian crossings.
'The first area to be affected will be Pacific Avenue. New pedestrian crossing will be installed as part of this work,” a council spokesperson says.
TCC transportation manager Martin Parkes says NZ Transport Agency will pay for half of the cost of the crossings, as they are being introduced due to road safety issues during summer.
Other crossings are to be on the Leinster Avenue side of Commons Avenue, between Grace and Pacific Avenues, and at Prince Avenue.
Councillors approved the four pedestrian crossings on July 30, after postponing from April to consider the best location in the busy corner where foot traffic from the boardwalk will combine with Mauao base walkers and pedestrians along Adams Avenue.
NZ Transport Agency will pay for half of the cost of the crossings, as they are being introduced due to road safety issues during summer, says Martin.

Cost of a pedestrian crossing

I heard recently that it costs $16,000 to install one pedestrian crossing in Tauranga. I wonder what the breakdown costings of this figure actually are. Also I think there needs to be a bit of prioritising regarding crossings. There are 5 school/preschool facilities at the Domain Road end of Doncaster Road in Papamoa, and not a single permanent pedestrian crossing there to accommodate the many pre-schoolers and their caregivers who walk them to and from these various facilities at all hours of the day.
Cruiseships?

What about local families enjoying fish and chips on the grass? Ooops, that right, the councillors that wanted this dine in restaurants and are out of touch!

The boardwalk with its bends is a joke i can see someone open a car door on people walking past and as posted think schools should get some too
Why bother

For close to a hundred years the Mall has not needed any pedestrian crossings so WHY NOW? Save the money or maybe only put in one or a maximum of two as many parking spaces will be lost with each crossing installed. Start saving the ratepayer money rather than wasting it.
