Keeping the drains clear

Tauranga City Council is reminding people who have a stormwater drain on or near their property to be careful when doing outside chores.

To help keep the beaches and waterways clean and fresh for the summer, the council is asking these people to wash their car on grass, rinse paintbrushes in the sink (so the water goes to the treatment plant), watch that outdoor cleaning chemicals don't go down the stormwater drain and put cigarette butts for the rubbish bin. Water and anything else that goes into stormwater drains isn't treated – it goes straight out into the environment.

This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, November 9, published below.

  • Water shutdowns occurring in Cambridge Road, Waihi Road, Lebannon Street and Caernarvon Rise, residents notified by letter drop.

  • Five sewer blockage were reported this week. None of which caused overflow to any open water ways. In Marsh Street a sewer pipe had been thrust damaged following some cabling work associated with the Harbour bridge works. The others sites were in were Courtney /Wilrose Place area, Maggie Place, Ngatai Road( Carlton Reserve area) and Ascott Road.

Feedback at this stage is that the Arts Festival ran very smoothly and the Festival organisers are pleased with our service level.

There is an increase in the number of 'underage youth events' being proposed for this time of the year. The TCC Event Planning Team (which includes representation from NZ Police) is considering these fortnightly to ensure that they meet all compliance issues, and have considered all of the risks associated with their event.
